Madrid-Barajas Airport is Spain's largest and busiest airport and one of the most important international airports in all of Europe. When flying to Barcelona you will likely depart from either Terminal 2 or Terminal 4. Terminal 2 is a part of the older section of the airport and it can be a bit difficult to navigate, although it does have all the cafes and shops one would expect form a major airport. Terminal 4, on the other hand, is a new and award-winning facility with dozens of shops and restaurants and it is very easy and pleasant to get around in.

You should arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure, but check with your airline to be sure. If you are taking Iberia's Puente Aereo service to Barcelona then you will need to head to Terminal 4. Because this service is so popular it has its own section set aside at the terminal and is easy to get to by following the signs. Vueling also operates out of Terminal 4 whereas Air Europa flies out of Terminal 2. Keep in mind that Terminal 4 is not connected to the other airport terminals and if you want to get from Terminal 1, 2, or 3 to Terminal 4 you will need to take a free shuttle bus. Because this is a domestic flight a passport is generally not required, but you will need to provide some form of photo I.D.

What to Expect When Landing in Barcelona

All flights from Madrid currently land at Terminal 1 of the Barcelona-El Prat Airport. You won't need to clear customs and can head straight to the baggage carousel. As you exit the arrivals area you will pass through the Sky Centre, which offers numerous dining and shopping options. In the arrivals lobby you will be able to rent a car from a number of agencies. Line 9 Sud of the Metro connects Terminal 2 to Barcelona's extensive metro system, allowing you to reach most major sights within the city. There is also a taxi stand immediately after exiting the terminal.
