How to Check In, Seat Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
Checking in with American Airlines is simple and fast, with many options for passengers to choose from. With the American Airlines application, passengers can check in, choose their seat, save their boarding pass, get real-time flight updates, terminal maps and more, or passengers can elect to check in at the airport terminal or online through their website. American Airlines recommends that you arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure for flights within the US and at least 60 minutes before your scheduled departure for flights outside of the US. It is advised to give yourself more time than you think you need as unforeseen circumstances can always pop up and create delays for passengers.
For seating with American Airlines, you can choose the seat you need at the price you want to pay. The basic Main Cabin fair includes one personal carry-on item and seat assignment at check-in. For those customers wishing to have access to overhead bins or more legroom, an upgrade will be required. Preferred seat and Main Cabin Extra upgrades start at $20 USD and include more legroom, preferred boarding and faster exit times for passengers. Preferred seats can be purchased at any time throughout the ticketing process (no need to wait until check-in) and are limited, so book as soon as possible. American Airlines also offers both Business and First class experiences for its passengers, with amenities ranging from Admirals Club lounge access, premium assistance throughout the airline process and more.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
On American Airlines, your baggage allowance depends on your airline ticket and your departure/destination region though, with most ticketing classes, American Airlines' baggage allowance is generous. With Basic Economy, only one personal item is allowed, otherwise, with all other ticket classes, passengers can take one personal item and one carry-on bag. For checked baggage, your AAdvantage, Oneworld, or ticket class can greatly impact your baggage allowance. All carry-on baggage must be smaller than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (including handles), must fit into the sizer at the airport.
Aside from Basic Economy, most class tickets include a free checked bag, as long as it fits within the specified dimensions and weight requirements. Some classes and AAdvantage members are allowed to check a second and third bag for free. For checked baggage, the dimensions must be smaller than 158cm total and less than 23kg and extra baggage fees range from $25 USD to $200 USD (depending on the number of checked bags). Please be aware of all liquid restrictions when flying with American Airlines (only TSA approved liquids and containers will be allowed on the plane) and contact American Airlines prior to your departure if you have any questions or read the TSA's advisory concerning liquids on airplanes.
Fees for overweight baggage depend on sizing and weight overages.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
With the largest entertainment library of any U.S. carrier, American Airlines has got you covered during your flight. With seatback screens in many flights and overhead options in others, passengers can keep themselves entertained, no matter how long their flight is. With lots of options for kids movies, TV, and more, everyone in the family will be taken care of during your flight with American Airlines.
Passengers are also able to use their own entertainment devices and wirelessly stream American Airlines entertainment content with the American Airlines app. Passengers also have access to onboard WiFi for a fee (depending on the flight), so you can stay connected while traveling. Prices range from hourly feels (2h--$12 USD, 4h--$17 USD, entire flight--$19 USD) to a monthly subscription ($49.95 USD plus tax). To check whether your current flight has WiFi, check your boarding pass and there will be a WiFi symbol located on the pass.
No matter where you're traveling to, American Airlines always offers delicious snacks and free non-alcoholic beverages on your flights. Depending on the length of your route, your meal may be included in the price of your ticket. For flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK), meals are included as well as flights between San Francisco (SFO) and New York (JFK). Depending on the time of your flight, American Airlines offers a continental breakfast box, sandwich wrap or a fruit and cheese box on these transcontinental flights. Meals and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are included on all International and Hawaiian flights, no matter what ticket you've purchased.
For passengers who require special meal requests, American Airlines is able to offer to fulfil special requests as long as passengers notify the airline at least 24 hours in advance (though there are some flights where not all meal options will be available--check with American Airlines prior to your flight to check your meal options).
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service Guidelines
On American Airlines, children up to the age of 2 are not required to have their own seat. Children under the age of two can ride in the lap of a parent or another passenger (who is at least 16 years of age) traveling in their party. If you would like your child to have their own seat, an adult fare must be purchased for the seat and they must have proper safety seat (approved by the Federal Aviation Administration), or they must be able to sit upright on their own without assistance and have their seatbelt safely fastened during taxi, takeoff, landing and whenever the captain has indicated that seatbelts must be worn (fasten seatbelt sign).
If a parent is traveling with a stroller, they are able to check it, free of charge. Only one stroller per ticketed passenger is able to be checked for free, however, if the stroller is too big (over 9kg) or cannot be collapsed, it must be checked at the ticket counter. Once a child has reached its second year, they are charged a full fare for their flight.
Children that are traveling unaccompanied have a variety of options for travel with American Airlines. American Airlines offers an unaccompanied minor service that ensures your child is taken care on their travel. The charge for unaccompanied minors is the price of an adult fare plus a fee ($150 USD, each way). Though children under 5 years of age aren't able to travel unaccompanied under any situation, children from ages 5-7 are able to travel on nonstop or direct flights unaccompanied. For children ages 8-14, they are able to travel on any nonstop or direct flight and some connecting flights through the continental USA. Any child that has reached their 15th year does not have to use the unaccompanied minor service. Please be sure to contact the airport during the booking process and tell them that your child will be traveling alone so that they can collect the necessary details from you and ensure that the proper care is available for your child.
Any child traveling internationally is required to have proper documentation (a passport or a legal Letter of Consent if any parent is absent from the party).
As American Airlines travels all over the world, their pet policy differs depending on your departure location and your arrival location, but no matter where in the world American Airlines is taking you, they endeavor for your dog or cat to travel as comfortably as possible.
On domestic flights within the continental USA, dogs and cats are able to travel with passengers as a part of their carry-on luggage as long as the pet is at least 8 weeks old, the passenger pays the carry-on pet fee ($125 USD one way), and the pet stays in the kennel for the entirety of the flight. Passengers must let American Airlines know that they will be traveling with a pet prior to arrival at the airport (at least 48 hours before for checked pets). Pet kennels must be large enough that the pet is able to stand and turn around as well as lie down in a comfortable position and have maximum dimensions of 48 x 33 x 22cm.
For larger breeds of dogs and cats, passengers should allow for more check-in time at the airport than normal and be prepared to complete a check-in list with an airline attendant, provide proper health certification and pay the pet fee (from $125 USD to $200 USD one way). For customers with questions or concern regarding traveling with pets or proper health certifications, they can reference the USDA's website (United States Department of Agriculture) prior to departure.
Be sure to check your arrival country's policy concerning transportation of animals as many countries have a mandatory quarantine period, or only accept certain breeds or species of animals. There are also specific breeds of dogs (snub-nosed) and cats (brachycephalic, such as Burmese or Persian) that will not be accepted as checked luggage. American Airlines will be able to answer all of your questions over the phone, or you can review their website for more information. Passengers are required to have all proper documentation for their pets and need to ensure that all pet vaccinations are up to date.
