China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited, commonly known as just China Eastern Airlines, is China's second-largest airline by number of passengers. Headquartered at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, China Eastern Airlines aims to bring "world-class hospitality with Eastern charm" to its global customers. The airline has hubs located throughout China and operates numerous domestic and international routes. Around 80 million travellers fly with China Eastern Airlines on an annual basis. Thanks to the airline's status as a member of the SkyTeam alliance, its passengers have access to over 1,000 worldwide destinations.

Since its establishment in 1988, China Eastern Airlines has grown largely through acquisitions and mergers with other airlines. The first acquisition occurred in 1997, when China Eastern Airlines took over China General Aviation. In 2001, China Eastern Airlines' completed a takeover of Great Wall Airlines and, in 2003, China Northwest Airlines and China Yunnan Airlines both merged into China Eastern Airlines as well. 2010 brought yet another merger, this time with competitor Shanghai Airlines, which became a China Eastern Airlines subsidiary.

One of the most defining moments of China Eastern Airlines' history came in 2012, when it was awarded the "Golden Ting Award" by the China Capital Market Annual Conference. This award recognized China Eastern Airlines as one of China's 50 most valuable brands.

China Eastern Airlines Fleet

China Eastern Airlines has a relatively large and young fleet of 486 total aircraft. The majority of the fleet is made up of Airbus models, namely the Airbus A320-200 and the Airbus A321-200, which are used primarily for domestic flights. China Eastern Airlines was actually the very first Chinese airline to order Airbus aircraft. The airline also flies over 140 Boeing aircraft, including 88 Boeing 737-800s.

Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Miles promotions

China Eastern Airlines' has a loyalty program known as Eastern Miles. Anyone over 12 years of age can sign up to be an Eastern Miles member and begin earning Eastern Miles points each time they fly. Members can also earn points on flights with China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Qantas Airlines. Points can be claimed retroactively for flights taken before becoming a member as long as a photocopy of the original ticket and boarding pass is provided. Once you have accumulated enough Eastern Miles points, you can redeem those points for award tickets, class upgrades, and extra baggage allowances.

Aside from a basic membership, there are two additional tiers to the Eastern Miles loyalty program. Eastern Miles members who accumulate a certain amount of Elite Points and Elite Times can be upgraded to a Silver Card or Gold Card membership. Silver and Gold memberships afford members even more opportunities for collecting points and redeeming rewards.

How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees

Checking in for a China Eastern Airlines flight can be done in person at the airport check-in counter or, for passengers holding e-tickets, online starting 24 hours before departure until 90 minutes before departure. Passengers who check in online also have the option of printing out their boarding pass. If you check in online but you are flying internationally or have baggage to check, then you must visit the China Eastern Airlines check-in counter at least 90 minutes prior to flight departure. If you are flying domestically and have no baggage to check, then you can proceed directly to security with your printed boarding pass when you arrive at the airport.

When flying with China Eastern Airlines, you can reserve seats online ahead of time for flights with ticket number prefixes 774 and 781. Standard seats can be reserved at no charge. If you would like some additional leg room, then you can reserve an exit-row or a front-row seat for an extra fee.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

Economy and Premium Economy passengers flying with are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage weighing up to 7 kg. China Eastern Airlines Business Class passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage and one travel garment bag. China Eastern Airlines check-in baggage allowances vary based on destination and on ticket class as follows:

Economy Class

  • For trips to and from Canada and the United States: Two bags each weighing no more than 23 kg and with combined total dimensions for both bags not exceeding 273 cm.
  • For all other destinations: No limit to the number of checked bags but each bag must not exceed 30 kg.

Premium Economy Class

  • For trips to and from Canada and the United States: Two bags each weighing no more than 28 kg and with combined total dimensions for both bags not exceeding 273 cm.
  • For all other destinations: No limit to the number of checked bags but each bag must not exceed 35 kg.

Business Class

  • For trips to and from Canada and the United States: Two bags each weighing no more than 32 kg and measuring no more than 158 cm in total dimensions.
  • For all other destinations: No limit to the number of checked bags but each bag must not exceed 40 kg.

Any baggage which exceeds the quantity, weight, or dimensions that you are allowed to bring for free will be charged excess baggage fees. Excess fees are determined based on your itinerary.

Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals

Passengers travelling with China Eastern Airlines can help pass the time by tuning into a complimentary movie or TV show. You can also sit back and listen to some music through the airline's entertainment system.

China Eastern Airlines also provides complimentary beverages, fruits, and other snacks during cabin service on its routes. Passengers on longer flights have the option to choose either Western meals or Chinese meals off the menu. Some examples of Chinese meals include pork buns, noodles, and delicious Chinese desserts, while Western meals include a Western-style breakfast and a cheesecake dessert. Special meal requests can be put in with the airline ahead of time.

Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines

China Eastern Airlines offers discounted tickets for both infants (over 14 days old and under two years of age) and children (under 12 years of age). An infant ticket does not include a seat and the infant must be carried by an adult 18 years or older. An adult is allowed to travel with a maximum of two infants or children under 12 years old. Any infant or child exceeding this quota must travel on an adult fare.

Unaccompanied minors over five years of age are allowed on China Eastern Airlines for half the price of an adult fare on domestic flights and the price of a full adult fare on international flights. Unaccompanied minor service is mandatory for children between five and 12 years of age, and available upon request for minors between 12 and 15 years of age. Unaccompanied minors will be supervised for the duration of the flight and until they meet with the receiving party at the destination. Children are also considered to be unaccompanied if they are flying in a different class than a parent or guardian.

Pet Policy

While pets are not allowed in the passenger cabin of China Eastern Airlines' flights, they can be transported in the cargo cabin as long as arrangements are made at least 48 hours ahead of time. Pets are charged as excess baggage according to the typical excess baggage fee for your itinerary. China Eastern Airlines limits the combined weight of the pet and of its container to 32 kg and places strict regulations on the type of carrier used. Make sure that your pet is travelling in a sturdy, well-ventilated container that provides sufficient space for them. China Eastern Airlines will not accept an animal for transport if the temperature on the day of departure is forecasted to be below 12℃ or above 30℃.
