Etihad Airways is the second-largest airline operating out of the United Arab Emirates after Emirates Airline. Its head office is located near the Abu Dhabi International Airport in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi. The airline was established by Royal Decree in 2003, placed an order for a new, top-of-the-line fleet in 2004, and recorded its first net profit year in 2011. Since then, Etihad Airways has only continued to grow in operation and in reputation. Canadian passengers can board an Etihad Airways flight at the Toronto Pearson International Airport to Abu Dhabi and many other worldwide destinations.
A highly regarded airline for its commitment to customer service and passenger comfort, Etihad Airways has been awarded over 30 airline industry honours during its less than two decades in operation. Its first major honour came in 2009, when it received the World Travel Award’s “best Business Class in the world” designation.” In that same year, the World Travel Awards in London rated Etihad Airways as the "World's Leading Airline.” Many more awards and recognitions have come the airline’s way over the years, one of the most recent and notable being its naming as the 2016 "Airline of the Year" by Air Transport.
Etihad Airways Fleet and Destinations
Thanks, in part, to its unique geographical position in the Middle East, Etihad Airways flies to over 110 passenger and cargo destinations all around the world. From its hub in Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways provides passenger service to Africa, Europe, Asia, Australasia, and North America on over 1,000 flights a week. The airline is part of a distinguished tier of carriers that flies to five or more of the world’s inhabited continents.
Among the most notable Etihad Airways destinations are Tehran, Istanbul, London, New York City, Tokyo, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Delhi, and Amsterdam. Etihad Airway’s reach is extended even further thanks to numerous code-sharing agreements and to the Etihad Airways Partners alliance that the airline itself established. Etihad Airways’ company slogan, “From Abu Dhabi to the World,” certainly holds true.
Etihad Airways operates one of the youngest fleets in the whole world, as the airline itself is also relatively young. Their cargo fleet consists of 35 Airbus A320s, 24 Airbus A330s, four Airbus A340s, 10 Airbus A380s, 16 Boeing 787-9s, and 24 Boeing 777s. The airline is looking towards the future with orders for additional Airbus and Boeing aircraft, chief among them aircraft from the Airbus A350 family, which have a capacity of up to 400 passengers.

How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
While you always have the option of checking in for your flight at the Etihad Airways check-in counter, you can also take advantage of the many benefits offered by online check-in. Online booking is available 48 hours to 1 hour before departure time. By checking in online and printing your boarding pass at home or at your hotel, you can skip the check-in queue altogether. Simply drop your check-in baggage off at the baggage counter before going through security.
If you check in for a flight on an internet-enabled mobile device, then you don’t even have to print a boarding pass. Etihad Airways mobile check-in allows you to receive a mobile boarding pass via email directly to your device, which you can then show when you pass through security and board your flight. If you wish to receive a mobile boarding pass, then you must check in at least three hours prior to departure.
You can select your seat for an Etihad Airways flight at the time of booking or at the time of check-in. After selecting your seat, you can take part in Etihad Airways’ unique bidding system for seat upgrades. Passengers can place a bid to either upgrade to the next cabin or to upgrade to a neighbour-free seat. You can bid for up to three neighbouring seats and, if you win the bid, then those seats will remain empty for the duration of the flight, giving you more space.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Etihad Airways sets a carry-on baggage allowance of one bag weighing up to 7 kg for economy passengers. Business and first class passengers are allotted up to two bags weighing no more than 12 kg in total. Any carry-on bag must be small enough to fit into the overhead storage compartment and therefore cannot exceed 115 cm in total dimensions. Passengers are also entitled to one personal item which does not exceed 5 kg.
Economy passengers flying with Etihad Airways are allowed to bring up to two pieces of check-in baggage each weighing no more than 23 kg. Business and first class passengers are allotted a limit of 32 kg per bag. While the maximum allowable dimensions for most Etihad airways destinations can add up to 207 cm, the maximum allowable dimensions for flights to and from the USA and Canada may not exceed 158 cm.
Sometimes you can’t help but fly with excess baggage. Thankfully, Etihad Airways makes excess baggage more affordable by offering a 20% discount on excess baggage that is purchased online up to 48 hours before departure time. Simply purchase your excess baggage as you book your ticket or do so at a later date before your scheduled flight.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
Known as E-Box, Etihad Airway’s in-flight entertainment system will easily keep you occupied for the duration of your flight. Updated monthly, E-Box brings you everything from the latest blockbusters to beloved classics. You can also choose to watch top-rated TV shows, tune in to live TV channels, listen to music, or play an interactive game.
Etihad ensures that every passenger is both well-entertained and well-fed. Economy passengers can choose from three different main courses, including a vegetarian option. To give you a taste of your destination, one course will always be inspired by the locale you are flying to. Etihad Airways also endeavours to meet any special dietary needs and preferences of its passengers. All meals are already prepared Halal and any additional requests can be made at the time of booking or at least 24 hours prior to departure.
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines
You do not need to purchase a ticket for any infant less than two years of age on an Etihad Airways flight. However, if you would like a separate seat for an infant, then you may purchase a child’s fare. A child’s fair automatically applies to any passengers between two and 11 years of age. Any child who is travelling on their 12th birthday or who will be turning 12 before the return flight will need an adult fare.
Etihad Airways provides extra care for any unaccompanied minors travelling on the airline’s routes. Children from five to 11 years of age travelling alone will require an adult fare and will be supervised by an Etihad Airways staff member during the flight. For an additional fee, parents and guardians can also request unaccompanied minor service for children who are older than 12 and younger than 18 years of age.
Etihad Airways has a strict pet policy which you’ll need to note before trying to fly with a pet. Pets are not permitted to travel either in the cabin or as checked baggage in the cargo hold due to UAE regulations which only allow animals to enter the country as manifest cargo. Guide dogs are accepted on Etihad Airways flights but must travel in the cargo hold on most routes. They are only allowed in the cabin on flights between the USA and Abu Dhabi.
