Avianca Cheap Flights, Flight Deals, and Airline Tickets

Avianca is the second-oldest airline in the world, the second-largest airline in Latin America, and the largest airline in Colombia, where it also serves as the national airline and flag carrier. With its headquarters in Bogota and hub at Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport, Avianca flies the most extensive network of airline routes throughout Latin America. The airline takes travellers to a total of 106 destinations in 26 different countries on almost 6,000 flights every week. Founded in 1919 as Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transporte Aereo (SCADTA), Avianca has a rich and extensive history.

The airline made its first flight in 1920 between Puerto Berrio and Barranquilla and established several more routes in the following year. In 1940, SCADTA merged with Servicio Aéreo Colombiano to form Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia S.A., or, as it is better known today: Avianca. Over the next few decades, the airline continued to grow its flights and fleet. It began incorporating Boeing jets into its fleet in the 1960s and was the first Latin American carrier to operate the Boeing 747. With the expansion of El Dorado International Airport in the 1980s, Avianca was able to further expand its operations. In the 1990s, the airline acquired the first of its numerous Airbus aircraft. More recently, in 2012, Avianca became a member of the Star Alliance, allowing it to reach over 1,300 global destinations.

If you’ll be flying with Avianca to visit one of the airline’s many domestic Colombian destinations, then you’re sure to have a fantastic trip. Why Fly with Avianca

Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Miles promotions

Avianca rewards frequent fliers through the frequent flyer program known as LifeMiles. All you have to do is register and you can begin earning miles by presenting your member card or inputting your member number whenever you book flights, hotels, and car rentals with Avianca or Avianca partners or whenever you shop with Avianca partners. Miles can likewise be redeemed on flights, service upgrades, hotel bookings, car rentals, and everyday shopping.

As you build your miles, you may be able to work your way up to the LifeMiles Silver, Gold, or Diamond tiers. Tier members receive additional benefits such as unlimited courtesy upgrades, access to Avianca lounges, priority check-in, priority boarding, and priority baggage handling. Gold and Diamond members are also allowed one additional checked bag and one additional carry-on, while Diamond members can enjoy exclusive access to the Bogota Diamond Lounge.

LifeMiles also pay off when flying with other Star Alliance member airlines. All tiers receive a priority to reserve on the wait list, and Gold and Diamond tier members also receive an additional baggage allowance as well as priority check-in, boarding, and baggage handling.

How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees

Avianca offers many different options when it comes to checking in for your flight, giving you the ability to choose the most convenient option for your travel itinerary. If you haven’t already selected your seat at the time of booking, then you may do so when you check in through one of these methods.

Airport Check-In

If you prefer to check in at the airport, then simply visit the Avianca check-in counter at least one hour in advance before a flight within Colombia or Ecuador, two hours before a flight within Peru, and 3 hours before any international Avianca flights.

Kiosk Check-In

Skip the check-in counter line by checking in at one of Avianca’s airport kiosks instead. Just follow the directions on the screen to print your boarding pass and any baggage tags you might need.

Web Check-In

Web check-in with Avianca allows you to skip both the counter and the kiosk by checking in online starting 24 hours before your flight. Once you fill in all of the requested information you will have the option of printing your boarding pass. Baggage tags can be picked up once you arrive at the airport.

Mobile Check-In

When you check in online you will be given the option to receive a mobile boarding pass directly to your mobile device. You can then show the boarding pass off your device when going through security and at the boarding gate.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

When flying with Avianca, economy and business class passengers are allowed to bring one piece of carry-on baggage weighing no more than 10 kg with total dimensions that do not exceed 115 cm. Smaller personal items such as a laptop, a coat, or a video camera may also be brought on board.

Avianca allows all travellers to bring at least one piece of free checked baggage on all domestic and international routes. Most economy passengers are limited to 23 kg and maximum dimensions of 158 kg. However, economy passengers flying to and from Europe, between Mexico and South America, and between the United States, Canada, and South America may bring two bags weighing up to 23 kg. Business class passengers are typically allotted up to two pieces of baggage each weighing up to 32 kg.

Passengers travelling with more than their allotted baggage or with baggage that is oversized or overweight will need to pay additional excess baggage fees. You can save some money by paying for your excess baggage in advance and receiving a 10% discount.

Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals

Most Avianca flights provide a personal screen for each passenger on the back of the seat in front of them. Passengers can watch movies and TV shows or play games on these screens. On Avianca flights with general screens, you can access multimedia content on your personal mobile device by downloading the Avianca Entertainment app before your flight.

Once the plane takes off, Avianca will provide you with a selection of in-flight meals, snacks, and beverages depending on the length of the flight and on your itinerary. Avianca can fulfil special meal requests and dietary restrictions at no extra cost on all international flights as long as you make the request at the time of booking or at least 24 hours before departure.

Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines

Avianca offers both a discounted infant fare and a discounted child fare depending on your itinerary and your ticket class. Infants over 10 days and under two years old may fly on an infant fare, while children over two years and under 12 years old may fly on a child fare. An infant fare, however, only applies to a child travelling on your lap. If you need to purchase an additional seat for your infant, then you will need to pay a child fare.

Avianca also offers unaccompanied minor service for children from ages five to 11 on both domestic and international flights. Your child will be picked up by a crew member at the check-in counter, assisted in boarding the plane, and delivered to the person who will be meeting them at their destination.

Pet Policy

If you’re looking to travel with your pet, then you’re in luck. Avianca allows cats and dogs weighing up to 10 kg to travel in a soft carrier in the cabin of the plane. The carrier must be able to fit under the seat in front of you and therefore cannot exceed 90 cm in total dimensions. Larger pets are permitted to travel in the baggage hold but with some restrictions. Flights of a duration of four to five hours only accept pets up to 10kg while flights of a duration of four hours or less accept pets up to 20 kg in the baggage hold.
