Flying out of Vancouver

When flying out of Vancouver, you’ll have one airport option: Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The airport is located approximately 12 km from downtown Vancouver and consists of a Main Terminal and a South Terminal. The Main Terminal is further subdivided into an International Terminal and a Domestic Terminal. Most flights from YVR operate out of the Main Terminal.

Flights from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta are regularly available during Puerto Vallarta’s tourist season, which runs from winter through to early summer. Flights are occasionally available throughout the rest of the year. Direct flights are available via the following airlines:

Your flight will likely depart from Concourse D in YVR’s Main Terminal, as this concourse accommodates almost all international flights. This concourse consists of 15 gates. The international section of the Main Terminal is outfitted with a variety of amenities, including restaurants and newsstands. Using YVR’s Food on the Fly program, you can even have food from the restaurant of your choosing packed up to take with you on the plane.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport Information

Though the airport’s legal name is Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, it is more commonly referred to as Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). PVR is located approximately 8 km from Puerto Vallarta. The airport serves over three million passengers per year.

The airport has one main terminal for all their commercial and general aviation. When flying from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta, you will be flying into the international section of this main terminal. Taxis are available outside of the international arrivals area 24/7. A taxi ride to central Puerto Vallarta will cost a flat rate of about $15 CAD. There are also four car rental companies with service counters at arrivals, including Avis and Thrifty. There are currently no public transportation links at the airport.

What to Expect in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a tourist town in Mexico filled with amazing beaches and popular resorts. The time when you land will be two hours later than the time in Vancouver, so prepare for a small time adjustment. Since you will likely spend your vacation at a beach resort, your Puerto Vallarta meal and entertainment costs will often be all-inclusive. Relaxing resort vacations are perfect for spring break, honeymoons and for family vacations.

The weather in Puerto Vallarta is quite hot year round whereas Vancouver has hot summers and mild to cold weather in the winters. The temperatures in this Mexican city do not often fall below 21°C. Humidity is high in Puerto Vallarta every month of the year. The city does not experience many hurricanes, but thunderstorms are common between July and September. If you plan to spend most of your vacation on the beach, you may want to avoid these rainy months.
