United Airlines Cheap Flights, Flight Deals, and Airline Tickets

United Airlines, commonly referred to as just United, is the third largest airline in the world by revenue. United is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois but operates numerous other airport hubs as well. Aside from Chicago, United Airlines’ other hubs are located in Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Guam, and Tokyo. United flies an extensive network of both domestic and international routes and is one of the founding members of the largest airline alliance in the world, Star Alliance. The airline’s main focus is within the Asia-Pacific region.

This established airline traces its roots back to Varney Air Lines, an air mail service established in 1926. After a merger with Boeing Air Transport, the resulting company became known as the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, which, in 1931, formed United Air Lines Inc. The airline continued to grow in revenue, passengers, and miles flown after World War II and throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s. One of the most important milestones for United Airlines came in 1985, when the airline purchased the Pacific Division of Pan Am and gained a hub at the Narita International Airport in Tokyo. In 1991 United also purchased Pan Am’s Heathrow Airport routes. Forced to weather an airline industry downturn in the early 2000s, United Airlines completely emerged from bankruptcy in 2006 and has been growing and expanding ever since.

Why Fly with United Airlines

Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Miles promotions

United Airlines’ MileagePlus frequent flyer loyalty program offers no shortage of rewards. You can use your miles on everything from air travel to daily activities and experiences. Enrollment is quick and simple, and you can start earning miles right away when flying United or when booking hotels and rental cars with United partners. Miles can also be accrued with credit card, financial, and retail partners. You can then redeem your miles on ticket and service upgrades, hotels, rental cars, and shopping and dining experiences.

The most active MileagePlus members can quickly find themselves achieving Premier status. United Airlines Premier MileagePlus members get to enjoy additional perks such as priority travel services, upgrades on tickets, fee waivers on service charges, bonus award miles, and discounts when travelling with other Star Alliance airlines. There are four tiers to the Premier MileagePlus program – Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, and Premier 1K – each offering more perks and benefits than the last.

How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees

For your convenience, there are many different ways of checking into a United Airlines flight. Check-in becomes available online up to 24 hours before departure and can be accessed through a browser or through your United Airlines mobile app. You will then have the option to either print your boarding pass or to have it sent to your mobile device. Note that a mobile boarding pass may not be available depending on your travel itinerary.

If you cannot check in for your flight online, or if you just prefer to check in at the airport, then you can simply make your way to a United Airlines check-in counter when you arrive at the airport. Alternatively, you can skip the line and check in at one of United Airlines’ convenient airport kiosks instead. Just follow all of the instructions on the screen to print your boarding pass and baggage tags.

Seat selection for United Airlines’ flights is typically done at the time of booking. You can also change or select your seat during check-in or at any time before your flight through the United website or App. Both MileagePlus members and non-members have the option of purchasing a more spacious seat in Economy Plus, while members can also request an upgrade award. MileagePlus Premier members get to enjoy space-available, complimentary upgrades to Premium cabin seating.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

Most passengers travelling on a United flight are permitted to bring one piece of carry-on baggage and one personal item into the cabin of the plane. The baggage must not exceed dimensions of 22x35x56 cm so as to fit into the overhead compartment, and the personal item must not exceed dimensions of 22x25x43 cm so as to fit under the seat in front of you.

When flying economy, any checked baggage which exceeds 23 kg or total dimensions of 292 cm will be subject to excess baggage fees. MileagePlus Premier Gold, Platinum, and 1K members and United Business or First Class passengers are allowed check-in bags weighing up to 32 kg. Checking a bag with United Airlines will typically come with a fee, though fees can vary depending on your destination and ticket class.

Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals

Depending on the aircraft that you will be flying on, your in-flight entertainment options will either be shown on the screen in front of you or accessible through your own personal device. If your flight comes with personal device entertainment, then you will need to download the United App from the Google Play or App Store before your flight. Don’t worry if you forget your headphones, as complimentary earbuds are available on most United flights.

While you enjoy your movies and TV shows you can also enjoy a range of food and drink selections. On domestic, Caribbean, and Latin American flights with United Airlines, passengers receive complimentary snacks and beverages and have the option of purchasing snackboxes, meals, and alcoholic beverages. On longer international flights to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific, passengers receive a complimentary three-course meal, complimentary snacks, and complimentary beverages including beer and wine.

Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines

Any infant under two years of age can travel free of charge on the lap of an adult over 18 on United Airlines flights within the United States, to the U.S. Virgin Islands, and to Puerto Rico. Infants under two travelling to any other international destinations, including Canada and Mexico, will need to purchase an infant fare ticket even if travelling on the lap of an adult.

Once a child reaches five years of age they may travel alone as an unaccompanied minor on a non-stop United Airways flight. The service is offered for children up to 15 years of age and requires an additional $150 payment each way. Unaccompanied minors are pre-boarded, seated near the front of the aircraft, and offered a complimentary food item during the flight. Young adults aged 16 and up are permitted to travel alone on United flights.

Pet Policy

With some restrictions, United Airlines allows rabbits, birds, cats, and small dogs to travel in the cabin of the plane for an extra $125 charge. Your pet must be able to comfortably fit in a kennel that is small enough to be placed underneath the seat in front of you. The kennel must be no larger than 44 cm long, 30 cm wide, and 19 cm tall. You’ll need to contact United ahead of time to request an in-cabin booking for an animal.

United Airlines also has a program in place for the transportation of animals that are ineligible for in-cabin travel. Known as PetSafe, this program ensures that your furry friend is kept safe and comfortable while travelling in a United Airlines’ specially designed pet compartment.
