Based out of the Hong Kong International Airport, Cathay Pacific is one of the largest passenger and cargo carriers in the world. This established and esteemed airline flies to 180 destinations in 44 different countries, including Canada. Cathay Pacific consistently ranks among the world’s best airlines and has, in fact, won the title for “World’s Best Airline” a total of four times. Cathay Pacific got its name long before the airline actually made its first trans-pacific flight, as the founders were confident that it one day would.

A Brief History of Cathay Pacific
Cathay Pacific was founded in 1946 and was initially known as "Roy Farrell Export-Import Co., Ltd.” It began by offering freight services between China and Australia. Less than a year later, however, the business moved to Hong Kong and the airline received its permanent name: Cathay Pacific.
Initially, Cathay Pacific only flew a few routes between Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and Australia. After acquiring Hong Kong Airways in 1959, Cathay Pacific grew and prospered. By 1964 the airline had carried its one millionth passenger, and in 1979 Cathay Pacific acquired its very first Boeing 747, which help to grow its 80s expansion. Flights to London were established in 1980 and flights to Vancouver in 1983.
During the mid-90s, Cathay Pacific embarked on a program to replace and modernize its fleet, giving the airline one of the world’s youngest fleets. Cathay Pacific was also one of the instrumental founding members of the Oneworld alliance, which was established in 1998 and which helped the airline expand even further. Despite economic challenges throughout the 2000s, Cathay Pacific set a record high profit in 2010. Around this time, the airline continued to upgrade its fleet with new deliveries of Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 aircraft.
Cathay Pacific Fleet
To carry travellers to its worldwide destinations, Cathay Pacific operates a large, all-wide-body fleet. The fleet is currently made up of 128 passenger aircraft, including 37 Airbus A330s, 21 Airbus A350s, and 70 Boeing 777s. Each aircraft is capable of carrying more than 250 passengers at once. The Boeing 777-300, of which the airline has 12, can carry almost 400 passengers. The airline also has 25 Airbus A350s on order, as well as 21 Boeing 777-9s.

Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Miles promotions
Frequent fliers with Cathay Pacific can take advantage of three different reward programs and enjoy the perks and benefits of each. These reward programs are:
Marco Polo Club
Both Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon fliers have the option of joining the Marco Polo Club, a loyalty program with rewards catered to enhancing your travel experience. Marco Polo Club members receive unique privileges when making reservations and checking in for flights. They are also entitled to greater baggage allowances and access to premium lounges. There are four membership tiers to the Marco Polo Club - Green, Silver, Gold, and Diamond.
One of the best perks of becoming a Marco Polo Club member is becoming an automatic Asia Miles member as well. Cathay Pacific is one of 25 Asia Miles partner airlines. The amount of miles earns depends on the type of ticket you fly with, ranging from 25% of actual miles flown on an economy class ticket to 150% of actual miles flown on a first class ticket. You can use Asia Miles for flight awards, companion tickets, flight upgrades, and numerous lifestyle awards.
Cathay Pacific participates in the reward programs of many partner airlines, including all of the Oneworld member airlines. This means that you can earn points and miles when flying with Cathay Pacific even if you are not a Marco Polo Club member, as long as you are a frequent flyer member with another Oneworld airline.
How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
With Cathay Pacific, you have many different options when it comes to checking in for your flight. If you prefer, you can simply check in at the counter once you arrive at the airport. Once you’ve checked in online you will also have the option of self-printing your boarding pass if you have access to a printer. When you arrive at the airport, you’ll simply have to drop off any checked baggage at the bag drop counter and make your way to security.Mobile check-in is another convenient option for checking into a Cathay Pacific flight. With mobile-check in you get to enjoy all of the benefits of checking in online with the added bonus of not having to print a boarding pass. You’ll instead be able to download your boarding pass directly to your mobile device.
You can select your seats on a Cathay Pacific flight at the time of booking or when you check in through any of the options above. If you’re flying economy and would prefer some extra legroom, then you can either redeem loyalty reward points or pay an extra fee for a more spacious seat. Extra legroom seats are free of charge to all Oneworld frequent fliers and Marco Polo Silver, Gold, and Diamond members.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Cathay Pacific has a very generous free check-in baggage allowance, permitting two free checked bags for economy passengers on all but one of the airline’s routes (only one check-in is allowed between Auckland and Hong Kong). Marco Polo Gold and Diamond members and Oneworld Emerald members are permitted to bring up to three and sometimes even four check-in bags.
Weight allowances per bag differ based on route, with 30 kg per check-in bag for economy passengers on most flights, and 23 kg per bag for economy passengers on flights to the America’s or to New Zealand. Check-in baggage that exceeds allowable weight limits will be charged an extra fee per kilogram.
All Cathay Pacific passengers are permitted to carry one piece of luggage and one additional small item on board. The cabin luggage must be able to fit into the overhead compartment and therefore cannot exceed 56x36x23 cm in dimensions. Small items that are up to 15x30x40 cm in size may be kept under the seat in front of you.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
No matter how long your Cathay Pacific flight is, you can stay entertained the whole time with the Airline’s selection of movies, television shows, music, games, and publications. Media highlights are curated monthly to ensure a wide range of options for everyone in the family.
Cathay Pacific’s in-flight meals tend to be the envy of many other airlines. All passengers, including those in economy class, are treated to a menu of tasty and satisfying dishes from a variety of different cuisines. Meals include starters, mains, desserts, and beverages!
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines
When flying with Cathay Pacific, you do not need to book a seat for an infant under two years of age. A special children’s fare is available for children up to 12 years of age, and parents also have the option of asking for a child restraint seat for children under three years of age.
If your child is between six and 12 years old and will be travelling alone, then you must inform Cathay Pacific at least 24 hours in advance of the flight so that they can provide you with unaccompanied minor service. Children 12 years and older are allowed to travel alone on Cathay Pacific flights, but parents can request unaccompanied minor service for any child under 18.
Cathay Pacific allows certain pets to travel as special check-in baggage in the aircraft’s cargo bulk compartment. However, pets are not included under the free allowance for check-in baggage and will have their own fee. The airline requests that you contact them at least 48 hours prior to departure to confirm your pet’s place on board. Unfortunately, Cathay Pacific does not accept some breeds of cats and dogs due to health and safety concerns, so make sure you receive confirmation that your pet will be allowed on board.
