How to Check In, Seat Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
With Ethiopian Airlines, passengers are able to check-in online through their website. Check-in easily either by computer or on your smartphone from 36 hours before your flight, up to 2 hours before your departure. During this time, you can also select your seat assignment and print your boarding pass (a printer is required). Some departure airports aren’t able to check-in for Ethiopian Airlines through the online check-in, so be aware that some departures require that you check-in at the airport. Web check-in is not available for passengers who require assistance from Ethiopian Airlines such as those passengers with requests for extra seats, wheelchairs, passengers traveling with pets, or unaccompanied minors. For passengers traveling without luggage, you can arrive at the Bole International Airport gate 30 minutes prior to boarding (if you are flying on Ethiopian Airlines internationally, you will have to confirm your arrival times with the airline at your departure), 1 hour before if you are dropping off luggage for international flights, and 45 minutes before for domestic as online check-in has a dedicated counter for passengers who have already checked in online.

Baggage Allowance and Fees
When flying with Ethiopian Airlines, your baggage allowance depends on your seat class. For passengers who are traveling in Economy class, you are allotted 1 piece of carry-on luggage with a maximum weight of 7kg, free of charge. Passengers traveling in Business class are allotted 2 pieces of carry-on luggage with a maximum of 7kg in weight for each item. In addition, passengers in both Economy class and Cloud Nine Business class are allowed to bring one personal carry-on item, such as a purse, a laptop, an overcoat, or infant food. Passengers who are flying with wheelchairs or other accessibility items are able to bring those items onboard free of charge.
The checked baggage allowance differs depending on which sector you are flying to and from. For the majority of flights, passengers in Economy class are allotted 2 pieces of luggage for a maximum of 23kg each; for Cloud Nine Business class, passengers are allotted either 2 pieces of luggage at a maximum of 32kg each, or 3 pieces of luggage at a maximum of 23kg each.
The maximum dimensions for all luggage is 158cm (length x width x height). The price for extra baggage depends on the weight and length and flight path of your trip but ranges from $60 USD up to $200 USD. If you know which items you will be traveling with and their weights, it would be best to call the airline and ask for an estimate on costs.
Passengers must know that baggage weight is restricted on all trans-Atlantic flights to a maximum (per single bag) of 32kg for Business class and 23kg for Economy class. Any baggage exceeding its class limit will not be accepted for flight.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals

Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service Guidelines
On Ethiopian Airlines, children who have not yet reached 2 years of age are able to ride for free on the lap of a parent or adult guardian. If a second child is present with only one adult guardian, then the second child must have its own seat purchased at an adult rate.
Children who are between the ages of 5 to 11 who are traveling alone on Ethiopian Airlines are considered Unaccompanied Minors and escort services are mandatory for these children. You must notify Ethiopian Airlines when booking your child’s ticket that they will be traveling as an unaccompanied minor and also fill out the proper documentation (and Unaccompanied Minor Form). The rate for a child traveling alone on Ethiopian Airlines is the price of an adult ticket plus an escort fee (starting at $100 USD per sector). Children from the ages of 12 to 17 are considered young adults and do not require a mandatory escort unless requested by their parents (and the same $100 service fee per sector still applies).
If you and a child are traveling to or from South Africa (under the age of 18), their law states that you must have consent (in the form of a signed affidavit) of both parents and must be able to display a full birth certificate at the port of entry. If a child is traveling alone to South Africa, they must carry a signed affidavit filled out by the missing parent or parents.
Why Fly 6 Pet Policy
When flying with Ethiopian Airlines, it’s important for passengers to notify the airline that you will be traveling with a pet, as you are required to let the airline know what kind of animal you are traveling with and the dimensions of its carrier. Only dogs and cats are allowed on any Ethiopian Airlines flights and are only accepted into the body of the aircraft if they have a container. They can be in the main cabin they are less than 8kg in weight and their container dimensions are not larger than 55 x 40 x 20cm. Larger cats and dogs will have to be shipped as cargo below deck. There are a limited number of animals that are allowed in the cabin, so be sure to reserve your pet as soon as possible, otherwise, you will have to ship your dog as cargo. Only 2 animals total are allowed in Economy class and 1 in Cloud 9 Business class. Seeing-eye dogs are allowed on Ethiopian Airlines flights provided they are harnessed properly and muzzled—these animals are transported free of charge, but passengers must make sure that the notify Ethiopian Airlines ahead of their departure.
Pet owners are charged the excess baggage rate when their pet is traveling with them, with fees starting at $50 USD and increasing with the animal’s weight. Pet owners are responsible for checking the transportation requirements between countries on all flights and ensuring that they have the proper paperwork (transportation papers, health certificates) for their final destination.
