Lufthansa CityLine started out with a 20-seat Twin Otter back in the 1970s. Shortly after Lufthansa penned an agreement with the fledgling airline, larger planes were added and CityLine's presence within Germany increased. Today quality, performance, safety and environmental awareness are some of the carrier's main priorities. As far back as 2004 CityLine won the German Environmental Reporting Award. Their current fleet of 50 jets are modern, well maintained and easier on the planet.

Why Fly With Lufthansa CityLine

How to Check In

Lufthansa CityLine passengers may check-in online beginning 23 hours before flight departure. At this time you may pick a seat, print a boarding pass or have one electronically sent to your email or mobile phone. Online check-in is not valid if you are a special needs passenger or have a child traveling alone. If you have baggage to check then stop at the counter, otherwise just head toward your gate.

Some airports have Check-In kiosks, others require you go to the counter if you've not checked in. Lufthansa CityLine advises passengers to get to the airport at least two hours before flight departure. Check-in deadlines vary depending on the departure airport and whether you are travelling domestically or internationally.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

  • If you are traveling in First or Business class, you are allowed two carry-on bags. Economy and Premium Economy passengers are allowed one per person. The maximum dimensions of any carry-on are 55 cm x 40cm x 23cm and the bag must weigh no more than 8 kilograms. Any carry-on must fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin. Remember, booking a bulkhead seat usually gives you more legroom but anything you bring must fit in the overhead.
  • Check-in baggage limits vary depending on your class of ticket and your destination. An Economy ticket within Europe will allow one free checked bag that weighs up to 23 kilograms. A Business Class passenger is allowed two free bags weighing up to 32 kilograms each. First Class passengers on intercontinental flights may check up to three free bags weighing up to 32 kilograms each.
  • Oversize and overweight fees are also charged based on destination and class of ticket. If travelling within Europe, an overweight bag fee is roughly $92.00 CAD, while that same bag on an intercontinental flight will cost you almost $200.00 CAD.

Seating - Leg Room, Choosing Seats

The largest plane in the CityLine fleet is the wide-body Airbus A340-300 with 18 First Class, 19 Business Class and 261 Economy seats. Seating in the First and Business Class cabins is 2, 2, 2, across, while the economy section is either 2, 4, 2 or 2, 3, 2. Premium Economy seats are wider and have more legroom. The Embraer 195 holds 116 passengers while the Embraer 190 has 100 seats. Both have two rows of 2, 2 seating with both Business and Economy Class cabins. The Bombardier CRJ900, used on regional flights, holds 86 people with the same 2, 2 configuration. Though the planes are of different sizes the pitch, or the amount of space between you and the seat in front of you, is almost the same.

Booking Fees

Lufthansa CityLine's booking fees include a $37 CAD charge for advanced seat selection in some classes of service. This is for passengers that want to reserve their seat in advance of the 23 hour check-in window. Exempt ticket classes include First, Business and Premium Economy. Members of the HON Circle and other Lufthansa frequent fliers do not pay a charge, no matter the ticket class. The fee is also waived if the seat selection is done directly with Lufthansa.
