What to See and Do in Los Angeles, California

  • Get an up-close view of the retired Space Shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center in Exposition Park near the University of Southern California. The Endeavour is the newest arrival in the exhibit devoted to space flight. It's in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion, with the massive external fuel tank displayed just outside. Considered one of the largest hands-on science centres on the West Coast, you'll also find exhibits on robotics, life sciences, ecosystems and scientific innovations of all sorts. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is next door.
  • Delve into Los Angeles' prehistoric past at the La Brea Tar Pits & Museum. The museum has a vast collection of prehistoric mammals, such as mammoth, sabretooth cat and the Western horse, extinct long before the European variety arrived. These animals, both predators and prey, had the misfortune of falling into the onsite tar pits and getting stuck. Watch as the scientists still pull fossils out of the gooey mix, then get a look at the fossil lab where paleontologists clean and prepare the bones for display. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is nearby.
  • If you're a movie fan, chances are you want to see the famed Hollywood sign. It's been sitting on top of Mount Lee for nearly a century and visible from many points around the city. Take a walk among the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which starts on Sunset Blvd. Visit the original Universal Studios and take the Movie Studio Tour. Watch as your tram slips into the water and Jaws decides to surprise you. Experience the art of special effects, including a massive simulated earthquake in a subway station. If a movie is shooting while you're there, you may see a star or two.
  • Want some outdoor time? Head for Griffith Park, home to the Los Angeles Zoo, the Los Angeles Steamers Railroad and the Wilson & Harding Golf Courses. The Griffith Park Pony Rides has been giving rides to kids since 1948. Or head to the Santa Monica Pier for some beach time and amusement rides.
