United Airlines and Air Canada both offer nonstop San Francisco International to Vancouver flights, and each airline flies several times throughout the day, providing options to travellers that may need to leave earlier or later in the day. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta offer flights from San Francisco International to Vancouver as well, but they make stops in Portland and Seattle. In general, the flights offered by Delta and American Airlines are cheaper than the nonstop flights offered by United and Air Canada, but cheap nonstop flights can still be easily found.
Terminal Information for San Francisco International Airport
Access to the airport is available via taxi or the AirTrain, which directly connects to the BART, making travel to the airport simple. All United flights to Vancouver from San Francisco International Airport fly out of Terminal 3 while all Air Canada flights fly out of the International Terminal. Terminal 3 has a Kid's Spot for children to enjoy while adults can indulge in yoga or a spa. The International Terminal also provides a spa service but does not have a Kid's Spot, instead opting for an Aviation Museum and Library.
It's important to note that travellers can freely walk between terminals, so the Kid's Spot in Terminal 3 and the Aviation Museum in the International Terminal aren't mutually exclusive. Wi-Fi is free throughout all terminals after signing in to the airport Wi-Fi service.
Terminal Information for Vancouver International Airport
Both United Airlines and Air Canada arrive at the international arrival terminal upon landing. After proceeding through Immigration Services and grabbing any baggage, hop on the Canada Line to head into the city. A single ride costs CA$5 plus regular zone fare, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. Car rentals are available, as well as taxis and hotel shuttles. Vancouver is very friendly to anyone travelling with a bike, as they provide a bike path that runs the length of the Canada Line that goes directly into the city. If needed, Vancouver International Airport provides free Wi-Fi throughout all terminals.
What You Need to Know
San Francisco International Airport suggests arriving at the airport no later than 2.5 hours before the scheduled departure time. A passport is required by TSA for any international travel. Once in Vancouver, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada can skip immigration queues by opting to use the Automated Border Clearance kiosks.
What to Expect in Vancouver
Vancouver, situated in the Pacific Northwest, is the perfect hub to try out some outdoor activities. Because of its location on the coast, it's in the same times zone as San Francisco, so there's no need to adjust watches when arriving.
In winter, head to Whistler and Blackcomb, an internationally renowned ski resort about two hours north of the city. In the summer, enjoy a hike at Capilano Canyon or a cycling ride through North Shore, said to be the birthplace of freestyle mountain biking and something of an international haven for mountain bikers.
