Flying out of London
London, England is served by six international airports, four of which fly direct from London to Munich. London's busiest airport is Heathrow Airport (LHR), located 23 km from London. Both British Airways and Lufthansa fly nonstop to Munich from LHR. British Airways uses LHR's Terminal 5 and Lufthansa uses Terminal 2.
Gatwick Airport (LGW) is London's next-busiest airport. It is located farther from London, at 47.5 km south. EasyJet is the only airline flying direct between LGW and Munich. EasyJet uses LGW's North Terminal.
The third option is London Stansted Airport (STN), located about 48 km from London. Nonstop flights to Munich can be found via EasyJet and Air Berlin. EasyJet also flies direct from London's fourth-busiest airport, London Luton Airport (LTN). No matter which airport you choose, you will need a valid passport to fly. Canadian tourists are permitted to visit Schengen Area countries such as Germany for a total of 90 days without a visa.
Munich Airport Information
The second-busiest airport in Germany, Munich Airport (MUC) is located approximately 28.5 km from Munich. The airport consists of two terminals: an older Terminal 1, subdivided into five Modules, and a newer Terminal 2. Air Berlin, British Airways and EasyJet use MUC's Terminal 1 and Lufthansa uses Terminal 2. It takes about ten minutes to walk between the terminals. There is also a free shuttle bus that connects the two every 15 minutes.
Shuttles, limousines and taxis all pick up from Munich Airport. Taxis can be found outside of arrivals at both terminals. A taxi ride to downtown Munich will take around 45 minutes. The airport is also accessible by rapid transit rail. Two S-Bahn lines stop outside of Terminal 1 every 20 minutes. A train ride to central Munich will take about 45 minutes. There is also an express bus system with stops at both terminals. The trip will be a bit shorter, at 35 minutes, and cost about $17 CAD. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver.
Car rental is another transportation option at MUC. Car rental service counters are located in the Munich Airport Center (MAC) which sits between the two terminals. Options include Europcar, Enterprise and Thrifty.
What to Expect in Munich
Munich is only one hour ahead of London, so jet lag is not a huge concern. Cost-wise, London's prices for meals and entertainment are generally higher than those in Munich. This allows you to enjoy more of Munich's top attractions worry-free, like the Residenz Palace museum, the Frauenkirche cathedral and Hofbräuhaus, a celebrated beer hall.
While London receives the majority of their precipitation in the winter months, Munich sees heavy showers and thunderstorms from June to August. Despite this fact, tourists flock to the city during the summer months. Spring and fall in Munich are generally mild to warm, and winters are mild to cold, with little precipitation.
