Arguably, the best Washington airport for travelling to San Diego is Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). This huge international airport offers non-stop San Diego trips with Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines. Concourses A, B, and C all host Southwest Airlines flights, while Concourse D is home to Alaska Airlines and Spirit Airlines.
The only downside? At 51 km away in Maryland, Baltimore-Washington International Airport is a bit of a drive from Downtown Washington. Public transportation isn't a feasible option for most travellers, so thy usually opt to drive to BWI from their hotel.
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is another major airport providing flights to California. United Airlines hosts all of the non-stop trips to San Diego from IAD, and flies out of the main terminal's Concourses C and D. Located in Fairfax, Virginia, this airport serves the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, and at 42 km away from Downtown Washington, its location is slightly more central than the Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI).
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) doesn't offer any direct flights into San Diego. However, this spacious airport provides non-stop trips to nearby Californian cities, like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Serving most of America's biggest airlines, DCA certainly has its perks, such as its prime location 5 km from Downtown Washington and an extensive domestic flight schedule.

While there are plenty of taxis parked outside the Arrivals gate, travellers can also take the Metropolitan Transit System bus routes 923 or 992, or board the airport trolley towards Middletown Station, whose Green Line trolleys do run downtown.
