Flying out of Rome

When flying from Rome, you will have two airport options. The first airport, Ciampino-G.B. Pastine International Airport (CIA), is located about 12 km from central Rome. It is better known as Rome Ciampino Airport. The airport's two airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air, fly to many international destinations. However, there are currently no Canadian destinations. Flying from CIA to Montreal is possible but will require at least two stops.

Rome's second airport, Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO), is the better option for flights from Rome to Montreal. The airport is better known as Rome Fiumicino Airport and is located about 35 km from central Rome. The airport consists of four terminals, connected by a free airport shuttle which runs every 15 minutes.

Both Air Transat and Air Canada fly direct from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Montreal seasonally. Air Transat offers direct flights every month except December, January and February. Air Canada's direct flights from Rome to Montreal are concentrated on the summer months. Both carriers use FCO's Terminal 3.

Many airlines fly this route in the winter with one layover, including British Airways (with a stop in London), American Airlines (with a stop in London or Philadelphia), and Swiss Airlines (with a stop in Zurich).

Montreal Airport Options

Montreal has one airport option: Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL). It is located 20 km from downtown Montreal and consists of one four-storied terminal. Baggage claim and transportation are on the ground level.

Taxis are always available just outside of arrivals. A ride to downtown Montreal will cost a fixed rate of $40 CAD. All other destination rates will be calculated by meter, with a minimum fare of $17 CAD. Montreal-Trudeau also allows Uber drives to pick up at the airport. Ubers will pick up outside of Door 6 on the departures level. There is also a public transportation bus line that stops at the airport. A bus ride to downtown Montreal will take 45 to 70 minutes, depending on traffic. The bus costs $10 CAD for an all-day pass.

If you'll be travelling throughout Montreal's top neighbourhoods, you may prefer to have your own transportation. Eight car rental companies have customer service counters at the airport, including Alamo, Enterprise and Thrifty.

What to Expect in Montreal

Rome is six hours ahead of Montreal, so jet lag will be a concern. Be sure to prepare in advance for the time shift you will experience. In general, meal prices are higher in Rome than in Montreal, so you will be able to experience more of Montreal's incredible restaurants.

Weather-wise, the two cities are quite different. Both cities see most of their tourist activity in the summer, but Rome's summers are warm and dry whereas Montreal's are warm and humid. Though Rome's winters can get cool, Montreal's winters are downright cold. If you will be visiting the city between November and March, be sure to pack for snow, wind and ice.
