What to Do in Uganda

Uganda's tourists often come from far and wide to see the gorillas. But you'll need a permit to track them, so obtain one far in advance! You can visit these majestic beasts in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It's a rainforest paradise where nearly half of the world's endangered mountain gorillas live.

The Nile is, of course, another popular attraction. Many visitors are eager to try kayaking and whitewater rafting down this famous river. You can also visit the safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Murchison Falls National Park. Be on the lookout for cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, primates, and much, much more!

The local cuisine is delicious, aromatic, and hearty. Heavy on starchy carbohydrates, the main staples are plantains, millet, cassava, and potatoes. A favourite traditional dish amongst visitors is Luwombo, steamed banana leaves filled with meat or fish. If you're not feeling adventurous, there are also American-style fast food joints in the bigger cities. Find your ideal hotel in Uganda using Skyscanner.

Travel Advisory

For Canadian travellers, there isn't an official travel advisory for Uganda itself, but certain areas of the country are less secure. Two regions in particular should be avoided. You shouldn't venture within 50 km of Uganda's borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as the areas closest to South Sudan. However, throughout the country, visitors should always exercise caution, due to potential civil unrest, armed assault, and corruption.
