Best Time to Book a Flight to Malta

If you're heading to Malta to enjoy the beach and sun then the summer months offer endless sunshine and hot temperatures that are routinely in the mid 30s. However, this is also high season and you will need to book your hotels and flights well in advance. A better option may be to head here during the spring or autumn months, which are usually still warm enough to enjoy the beaches but outside of the crowded peak tourist season. While winters are a bit too cold for sunbathing, they are good for checking out Malta's rich cultural heritage. Christmas, in this deeply Catholic country, is also a popular time to visit. You can zero in on the cheapest time to fly to Malta by using Skyscanner's Whole Month search feature.

Airports in Malta

There is only one airport in Malta, the Malta International Airport, which is often called the Luqa Airport. Almost all flights to Malta International Airport are offered on a seasonal basis and originate from other European cities. You can get to Malta from almost any city in Europe, but flights to and from outside of Europe are largely limited to Tel Aviv, Tunis, and Dubai. The airport is popular for low-cost carriers, including easyJet, Jet2.com, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Wizz Air, and, most prominently, Ryan Air. However, most of Europe's major legacy carriers also fly here, including Aegean Airlines, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, and Turkish Airlines.

What to See and Do in Malta

Most visits to Malta begin in Valetta, Malta's beautiful and historic capital city. The historic heart has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is rich in architectural and artistic masterpieces. The Grand Master's Palace was once home of the Grand Masters of the Knights of St. John and it features a stunning interior. Meanwhile, St. John's Co-Cathedral is home to the massive painting of St. John the Baptist by Caravaggio, one of the greatest works by the legendary Italian artist.

Outside of Valetta, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are two Stone Age temples on Malta's south coast that are more than 3,600 years old. The Ggantija Temples are the most massive megalithic temples on the island and are also thought to be the oldest. The Blue Grotto, meanwhile, features deep blue seas and spectacular cliffs, making it one of Malta's most stunning natural sights. If you want to hit the beach, head to Mellieha, Golden Bay, and Saint Thomas Bay. With Skyscanner's hotel search feature you can find a great place to stay in Malta, whether you are looking for big city culture or a relaxing retreat by the beach.
