What to Do in India

A huge country, India offers so much for all kinds of travellers. Whether you’re looking for spiritual immersion, a nature-filled adventure with plenty of outdoor activities, a sunny beach escapade with or without a lively partying scene, a romantic interlude, or a cultural journey, India has them all.

The capital of New Delhi is known for being a frenetic hive of activities, a place where competing sounds and smells fill the air and energy seems to ooze from the sidewalks. One of the most historic cities in the world, a few highlights include exploring the stately and vast Red Fort, gazing up at the Qutub Minar, visiting Humayun's Tomb, being dazzled at Jantar Mantar, and admiring colonial architecture in Lutyens’ Delhi.

Mumbai is known as the country’s commercial heart, and also leads India’s film industry. Major attractions and activities include visiting Bollywood, exploring inside the walls of Fort St. George, seeing the diverse collection of religious buildings, and having fun at Essel World theme park. Slum tours are popular too.

Goa’s pristine beaches and eclectic nightlife act as a magnet for many, whilst Kashmir is known for its spectacular scenic beauty, the rugged Himalayan mountains, and abundant hiking opportunities. Head to Kerala if you dream of drifting through backwaters on a house boat, experience the strong spirituality in Varanasi, and visit Agra to see the iconic Taj Mahal.

Popular Celebrations in India

Many travellers dream of experiencing the vibrant colours of Holi. Falling in February or March, the best places to experience the festivities are in the northeast or western areas of India.

Diwali, in October or November, is known as the Festival of Light. It is a lovely time, filled with many festivities, and it can be experienced all around the country.

Do note that the dates for Holi and Diwali change each year, so check in advance to avoid disappointment.

The fixed-date national holidays are Republic Day (26th of January), Independence Day (15th of August), and Gandhi Jayanta (2nd of October).
