Cheap flights to Laos

Laos often gets overlooked by travellers, especially in favour of the tourist powerhouses of Thailand and Vietnam that border the country. That is changing, however, as more people come to discover Laos' hidden gems, such as the gorgeous Mekong River and its ornate Buddhist temples. And unlike many of its neighbours, the culture in Laos is decidedly laid back, making this country a great change of pace from much of Southeast Asia. Getting to Laos is now much easier than it was in the past and Skyscanner's monthly search tool can help you find the cheapest flights.

What to do in Laos

The relaxed capital city of Vientiane is where you will find the Pha That Luang, a three-layered golden stupa that has become the national symbol for the country. Head north to the ancient capital of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a stunningly well-preserved cultural treasure. The city includes numerous Buddhist temples, French colonial structures, and traditional Lao homes and is not to be missed. Wat Phu in Champasak near Cambodia is a ruined temple complex that bears striking similarities to Angkor Wat.

Along with those cultural attractions, the natural scenery also makes Laos truly unforgettable. The north of the country features mountainous terrain and stunning limestone karsts carved by the Mekong River. The southern part of the country is far more flat and enjoys an extremely laid back lifestyle. It is also a great place for trying to spot some Mekong pink dolphins.

Best time to fly to Laos

The best time to visit is November to March, when the weather is dry and comfortable (although it can get cold in the mountains). While this is Laos' high season, finding hotels and flights is still generally easy except around peak holiday periods like Christmas and New Year's. From March to May temperatures begin to soar, often exceeding 40 degrees. This is followed by the wet season, from May to October, when temperatures cool a little but rain is frequent and flooding possible.

Airports in Laos

Laos has four international airports with one each in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet, and Pakse. Keep in mind that there are no direct flights from North America to Laos and usually the easiest way to get to the country is to fly into Bangkok and grab a connecting flight or bus. The airports in Vientiane and Luang Prabang have the most international connections, primarily to other East Asian cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Kunming, Seoul, Hanoi, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phnom Penh.
