Flying Out of Bangkok

There are two airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), located approximately 30 kilometres east of central Bangkok, and Don Mueang Airport (DMK), which is situated in Bangkok's industrial area about 30 minutes from the city centre.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is Bangkok's largest and busiest international airport. The facility handles long-haul international flights as well as some domestic and short-haul international routes. Major airlines that fly out of Suvarnabhumi Airport include Air China, Air France, All Nippon Airways ANA), Bangkok Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, and Lufthansa.

Don Mueang Airport is the older and smaller of the two airports. The airport handles both domestic and international flights and serves as a hub for most of the country's low-cost airlines. If you're flying out of Bangkok on AirAsia, Milindo Air, Nok Air, Scoot Airlines, or Thai Lion Air, you'll probably depart from Don Mueang Airport.

Don Mueang Airport is connected to Bangkok by SRT surface rail, but the easiest way to get to this airport is by taxi. The airport is located near Bangkok's residential areas, so you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport if you're leaving early in the morning or in the evening.

What to Do at the Airport

With more than 270 retail shops dotted throughout Suvarnabhumi Airport's Departure Hall, you'll have plenty of opportunities to do some last-minute shopping or simply window shop before your flight. If you'd prefer to indulge in a little pampering before takeoff, head to Royal Orchid Spa in concourse D.

While Don Mueang Airport is much smaller and less modern than Suvarnabhumi Airport, it has all of the usual facilities and services that you would expect to find at an international airport. If you have some time to kill before your departure, be sure to check our the Royal Thai Air Museum, which is located directly behind the airport and houses aircraft and equipment dating back to the beginning of Thai aviation.
