Established in 1993 as a minor carrier, the airline now operates a large fleet of Airbus jets out of the hub in Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The narrow body Airbus A320 services short to medium haul routes, while the wide body Airbus A330 travels longer international routes.

In 2016, AirAsia received a punctuality rating of 73.50%, with 26.5% of flights delayed or cancelled. This places the airline in comparable standing with other low budget carriers in the region.

In addition to a commitment to affordable travel, AirAsia is dedicated to promoting global philanthropic efforts. The AirAsia foundation is a division of the AirAsia group that promotes humanitarian and environmental efforts in six different countries.     BIG Loyalty Program and Miles Promotions

    AirAsia offers the Big loyalty program, a tiered system that allows you to earn and redeem miles with AirAsia and affiliate partners. The program includes Red, Gold, Platinum, and Black tiers. Discounts on AirAsia products increase each time you move to a high level of status. Membership is reviewed annually and determined by the number of points earned and number of qualifying segments flown each year.

    Points can be redeemed for free or discounted flights with the airline itself or with airline partners. Rewards can also be used for hospitality, travel attractions, and lifestyle purchases.

    In addition to earning points on your flights, the Big loyalty program offers a prepaid MasterCard that allows you to earn on everyday purchases. There are no annual fees or interest charges, and the card is accepted at over 35.9 million locations worldwide to afford you maximum earning potential for your points.

    The Big loyalty program is accessible on the AirAsia website, or available as a mobile app for your digital device. Those with the app are the first to receive notices of additional flight deals and promotions.

    Check In, Seat Reservations, and Extra Legroom

    AirAsia allows you to check in online 14 days to 60 minutes before your scheduled departure. Once you have completed online check in, you can print your boarding pass off at home or scan your digital copy at the airport kiosk. Boarding gates close 20 minutes prior to departure for both domestic and international flights. At this time, online check in is not available for those departing form Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Those departing from this location are asked to use the self check in kiosks located at the airport. If you are waiting for your flight from Kuala Lumpur, you are welcome at the AirAsia Premium Red Lounge, open 24 hours and located on the Mezzanine level. Entry is complimentary for Premium Flex and Premium Flatbed travellers, or available to those travelling in Low Fare at an additional charge.

    Low Fare tickets are the most affordable option, and include a standard seat that will be assigned to you by the airline. Value Pack is an add-on to low budget fare, and includes perks such as checked luggage and an in-flight meal. Premium Flex and Premium Flatbed offer additional seating options, as well as express check in and boarding.

    Standard low fare seats are assigned at check in, and offer a width of 16-17” and a pitch of 28”. You can select a particular standard seat, such as window or aisle, for a small fee. Those travelling in Premium Flex have the option to choose their standard seat free of charge. Hot seats have greater pitch and legroom, and can be purchased at an additional cost. Premium Flatbed seats recline into a fully horizontal position, and include greater space, comfort, and privacy.

    Baggage Allowance and Additional Fees

    AirAsia allows passengers to bring two pieces of cabin luggage. The first may not exceed 56x36x23cm, and is expected to fit in the overhead compartment. The second is a small personal item, such as a purse or handbag, which must fit under the seat in front of you and may not exceed 40x30x10cm. Together, the two pieces cannot weigh more than 7kg.

    Any additional cabin bags, or bags that exceed the size and weight limits, will be placed in the hold and charged as checked luggage.

    Low budget fares with AirAsia do not include any checked baggage. If you wish to book a checked bag, you can do so during online check in or up to 4 hours before your flight on the Big Member Account website page. Those travelling in Premium Flex and Premium Flatbed typically receive on checked bag free of charge, with some route exceptions.

    You can pre-book a bag weighing 20, 25, 30, or 40 kg for all flights except those to and from the United States. There is no limit to the number of bags you can check, so long as they do not exceed weight limitations or overall dimensions of 319cm. If you choose to purchase a checked bag at the airport counter, it may not exceed 15kg and will incur additional services charges.

    Passengers travelling to and from the United States are limited to two checked bags, each weighing no more than 20kg.

    In Flight Dining and Entertainment

    AirAsia offers a selection of meals from the Santan cuisine on-board menu. Meals must be booked at least 24 hours in advance of your flight, and can be reserved through the website. Low fare tickets do not include a meal unless you have purchased the value pack add on. Premium Flex and Premium Flatbed tickets both include one complimentary meal and drink.

    Entertainment is available for purchase on board all AirAsia except those to New Zealand, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and the United States. The Xcite Tab features a 10.1” HD display with accompanying headset, which can be rented for the duration of your flight. The tab comes preloaded with a wide selection of movies, TV shows, music, and magazines. If you wish to enjoy the in-flight entertainment it is advisable to pre-book well in advance, as units are limited.

    Some AirAsia aircraft are also equipped with Rokki Wi-Fi, which can be purchased in advance or on-board to enjoy additional entertainment. Rokki offers 3MB and a 10MB access plans, sufficient for most apps and light internet browsing.

    Child Fares and Minor Policy

    Infants between the ages of 9 days and 2 years receive a discounted rate when flying on board AirAsia flights. Your infant must sit on your lap when flying, as car seats are not accepted in the cabin. There are a limited number of infants on each flight, so be sure to book your ticket well in advance.

    All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. At this time, AirAsia does not offer an unaccompanied minor service.

    Children receive the same cabin baggage as an adult, although infants are not eligible for cabin baggage. Prams and strollers cannot be brought in the cabin, but may be placed in the hold free of charge. Car seats may be checked at an additional cost.

    Travelling with Pets

    AirAsia does not allow animals on board any flights. Service dogs may be allowed to travel, provided you contact a customer service representative at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure.
