Established in 1937 as a small airline on the Northern coast of Iceland, Icelandair later merged with another minor carrier and adopted the current name for international markets in 1979. The fleet consists of Boeing 757 aircraft equipped with in flight entertainment, contemporary navigation and safety systems, and equipment that conforms to international environmental standards. In 2016, the airline added the Boeing 767 wide body craft for additional comfort on long haul flights, and intends to acquire the Boeing 737 MAX by 2018.

Icelandair prides itself on punctuality, placing second and first as Europe’s most punctual airline in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Today, the airline boasts an overall punctuality rating of 89%, with 10% of flights being delayed and 1% being cancelled.

Saga Club Loyalty Program and Rewards

Icelandair offers Saga Club loyalty, a rewards program that allows you to earn and redeem points with the airline and it’s partners in the hospitality industry.

Saga points are earned on all Icelandair flights, on both your tickets and any purchases you make on board the aircraft. You can also earn with affiliates including Hertz car rental, Radisson hotels, Iceland Excursions, and more. Once you have accrued sufficient mileage, you can book free flights, use points as partial payment, and transfer miles to family and friends. Saga Club points can also be redeemed for outside perks such as Amazon gift cards and car rentals, or donated through Icelandair’s charitable program Special Children Travel Fund.

The Saga Club rewards program is a tiered system, with privileges increasing through the Blue, Silver, and Gold levels. Saga Blue is the most basic card – this allows you to earn and redeem miles through the program. The Silver tier includes lounge access, upgrades, and baggage benefits, while Gold includes free on-board Wi-Fi and parking at Reykjavik’s Keflavik airport.

Saga Points are earned with Icelandair and affiliates, while Card Points are earned only on scheduled Icelandair flights. The Saga Points can be redeemed for products, while the Card Points determine your tier within the program and relate only to privileges. For both, simply sign up online and start earning Saga Points and Card Points today.

Check In, Seating Class, and Legroom

Online check in for all flights to and from Canada and Europe opens 36 hours before scheduled departure, and 24 hours in advance for those to and from the USA. With the exception of Belfast and Aberdeen, online check in is available for all destinations. If your flight is departing from North America, you will have to visit the airport check in desk to collect your boarding pass.

You are also welcome to check in when you arrive at the airport, at the airline desk or one of the self-serve kiosks at participating airports. In Canada, self-serve check in is available at Edmonton, Montreal, and Vancouver International airports.

If you have booked directly with Icelandair, you can request specific seats in the My Trips page on the website. Once your flight is open for online check in, you are also able to select your seats at that time.

A ticket in Economy Light, Economy Standard, and Economy Flex offers a comfortable seat with 32” of legroom. Those in Economy Comfort Special and Economy Comfort have 33”, while those in Saga Class receive a full 40” of legroom. To purchase a seat with extra legroom you must upgrade the class of your ticket, however, you are welcome to fly each leg of your journey in a different class if you so desire.

Baggage Allowance and Excess Cargo Fees

A ticket in Economy Light or Economy Standard allows you to bring one piece of carry on luggage weighing up to 10kg, as well as one small personal item. For those in Economy Comfort and Saga Class, you may bring an additional piece of carry on luggage, not to exceed 10kg. The total dimensions of a single piece of carry on luggage cannot be larger than 115 cm.

The most affordable ticket class is Economy Light, as it includes no checked baggage. Economy Standard includes one bag up to 23kg, while Economy Comfort includes two. A ticket in Saga Class allows you to bring two checked bags up to 32kg each, while those who qualify as Silver and Gold members are invited to bring one additional checked bag free of charge. Checked baggage must remain within the total dimensions of 158 cm to avoid incurring oversize baggage charges.

The fees for an extra checked bag on flights between Canada and Iceland begin at $92, or $126 between Canada and Europe. Additional charges apply for baggage that exceeds the dimensions and weight limits.

    In Flight Dining and Entertainment

In-flight entertainment is available with all tiers of ticket on board Icelandair flights. The personalized television in the seat in front of you allows you to choose your programming, with child friendly options for those travelling with family.

An Economy Light, Standard, or Flex ticket includes complimentary non-alcoholic beverages with additional drinks and snacks available for purchase. Those in Economy Comfort Special, Comfort, and Saga Class receive a full complimentary meal, as well as blankets, pillows, and alcoholic beverage service. Wi-Fi is available for purchase on board, or included as a complimentary privilege in Saga Class.

Infant, Child, and Unaccompanied Minor Policies

If you are travelling with an infant or child, you are welcome to bring along a child seat so long as it meets required safety standards. Infant meals are available on board, which must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance of your flight. Children from 2 – 11 years old receive a complimentary meal with Icelandair, as well as postcards and coloring.

If your child is between the ages of 5 – 11, they are able to fly as an unaccompanied minor. Bookings must be made through the customer service telephone contact, and are not available online. Unaccompanied minors booked with Icelandair can only travel on Icelandair flights, and not on any connecting flights with different airlines. An Icelandair airline representative will guide your child through the travel process until a registered adult at the destination airport meets them. Only four unaccompanied minors may travel on each flight, and additional fees apply for the service.

    Travelling with Pets

Animals are welcome on board Icelandair flights, and travel in a climate-controlled section of the cargo transport. Up to four kennels are allowed on each flight, although two small animals of the same species can travel together in a kennel. The combined weight of the pet and carrier cannot exceed 40kg. Contact your local Icelandair customer service office well in advance of your flight to book a pet, as spots fill up quickly. Between Iceland and Canada, the pet fee is $197, or $213 between Canada and Europe.

Specially certified animals are allowed to travel with you in the cabin, including escort, rescue, and sniffer dogs. Service dogs including those assisting vision and hearing impaired passengers are welcome to travel free of charge in the cabin. With all animals, including service dogs, please notify the airline at least two days in advance of your flight.

Animal quarantine processes vary from country to country, so please check with your destination as to the necessary regulations regarding travelling with pets.
