Whether you’re thinking of a trip to Las Vegas to try your luck at the machines or to live out a fantasy from The Hangover for your own bachelor party, you have a great trip ahead of you. The better you plan your trip, the more fun you’re likely to have. Here is a bit of basic information to keep in mind as you make travel arrangements.

Flying out of New York City

The city of New York is served by three airports -- John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) are right in the city, and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), is 15 miles away in the town of Newark in the neighboring state of New Jersey. The question of which airport you pick, depends greatly on what part of the city you believe you will be leaving from.

Geographically speaking, LaGuardia is the closest to Manhattan, the main part of New York City. It is the most dreaded of the city’s three airports, however, and passengers tend to pick another airport if they can manage it. There’s a great deal of construction on both on the airport and on the streets around it, which means it can take an unpredictable amount of time to get there. The New York City subway doesn’t directly go to the airport; it goes to the general neighborhood. You need to transfer to a city bus. From Midtown Manhattan, however, you can take a $30 Uber ride directly to the airport, but you should set aside time for one of the neighborhood’s legendary traffic snarl-ups.

JFK is a little farther away, but it’s much more easily reached. If you have a choice, this is the airport to pick. A number of subway lines reach various subway stations in Queens (Howard Beach JFK is the closest). From any of these subway stations, you get to switch to the AirTrain elevated rail to directly go to one of the airport’s six terminals (remember that these are not numbered sequentially).

Newark Liberty is another option to take. If your flight leaves at a non-peak time of the day, you could conceivably choose this airport. You’ll get great views of Manhattan on the way, and you’ll make it much faster than if you chose JFK. But this isn’t an option to take if you have a rush hour flight.

Arriving in Las Vegas

While Las Vegas technically has two airports, McCarran International and Henderson Executive, the latter is only used as a reliever airport. McCarran is the main gateway airport to the city of Las Vegas.

McCarran is a modern terminal, with all the facilities you would expect. There are two terminals – 1 and 3, and it’s possible to move between these terminals by way of an inter-terminal shuttle that runs every 15 minutes. There’s free Wi-Fi available everywhere, there are plenty of power outlets to charge everything, there are art exhibitions, banks, children’s play areas and even pet relief areas. This being Las Vegas, of course, there are slot machines everywhere, as well. If you’d like to spend the night at this airport, you should remember that there are no full-length benches in most places. The post office at Terminal 1 is the one exception.

Since the airport is very close to the city, getting to and from the airport is easy enough. If you have a hotel booked, you’ll probably be able to take advantage of the hotel shuttle. Having fun in Las Vegas

The city of Las Vegas needs no introduction -- it’s the Mecca for fun, of America. All you want to do is to remember there’s more to the city than just The Strip. There are plenty of great neighborhoods in Las Vegas that compete with it -- Fremont Street and Town Square are only two examples. You need to remember to go out there and explore.
