Haarlem is niet groot, wel groots. Haarlem is geen wereldstad, maar wel een wereldplek. Een wereldplek met een menselijke maat. De New York Times schreef: ‘Haarlem, A Classic Dutch City With a Village Feel’. En zo is het ook. De prachtige monumentale binnenstad ademt de sfeer van de Gouden Eeuw en het typische dorpsgevoel is bewaard gebleven.

Nice town 10 minutes from Amsterdam and a way to really see a great Dutch town full of shopping, pedestrian precincts, restaurants and cafes all without the crowds of Amsterdam and easy to get to by train from the Central Station.

An easy train ride outside of Amsterdam lets you escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam for a little bit.

Amsterdam is a beautiful city with plenty to do, and is very accessible to visitors from the US and UK. As such, it's absolutely packed with tourists for much of the year. If you want a more typically Dutch experience, take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem (15 minutes, €3.80). The Haarlem city center is reminiscent of Amsterdam, but without the throngs of visitors and souvenir shops. The city is a cultural hub, where you can find a variety of museums and art galleries, as well as the famous Grote Markt, an outdoor market. If you're in Amsterdam to party, stay in De Wallen. But if you have a few days and want to immerse yourself in the local culture, don't miss Haarlem. It's Amsterdam, the Dutch way.
