Getting to Luanda Airport
Quarto de Fevereiro Airport (also known as Luanda Airport) is located in the southern part of Angola's capital, with easy access to nearby hotels and tourist attractions. It is a major hub for SonAir, and TAAG Angola airlines, but also offers routes from a wide variety of international carriers. There are no direct flights available from Canada to Luanda Airport, so you'll have to route through a city like Paris (CDG), London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), or Houston (IAH).
To enter Angola, Canadians must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months from their date of departure, as well as the appropriate visa. To get a visa, you'll need to complete a criminal background check with your local police or the RCMP (submitted in English and with a notarized Portuguese copy), then apply at an Angolan consulate. Tourist visas are valid for up to 30 days, but can be renewed once for a maximum stay of 60 days.
The Best Time To Visit Luanda
Luanda has a great climate year-round, with average temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius. Most tourists choose to travel from May-September, when the weather is perfect and there are very few rainy days. If you head to Angola during the rainy season (March and April), however, you can find some really great deals on flights and hotels!
What to Do in Luanda
Luanda is a city of contrasts - there are many luxury hotels, restaurants, and attractions for tourists in the middle of the city, but most locals live in slums on the outskirts. We recommend sticking to the city centre for a safe, fun trip. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:
- Take a walk along the seafront promenade, known as Marginal. You'll find plenty of beautiful hotels, high-class restaurants, and can check out some amazing yachts in the port!
- Head to Miraduro da Lua, just outside of the city, for some spectacular mountain views and an otherworldly landscape that is sure to impress!
- Check out the Fortaleza de Sao Miguel, an old colonial fort that overlooks the city. It features some excellent exhibits on Angolan military history with a great view of Luanda.
