Located on the border of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland, Estonia is a gorgeous northern European country with a rich culture and varied landscape. The country's rocky beaches, old-growth forests, and stunning lakes are dotted with medieval castles, churches, and hilltop fortresses that highlight Estonia's unique heritage.

Formerly part of the Soviet Union, Estonia offers a unique blend of Slavic, Russian, and Scandinavian cultures. Getting to Estonia

Estonia has four major airports, which can be found in Tallinn (TLL), Tartu (TAY), Kuressaare (URE), and Kardla (KDL). Unfortunately, there are no direct flights available from Canada to Estonia. However, many international airlines offer cheap flights to Estonia's major airports, including KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and more.

Estonia is a member of the Schengen area in Europe, which means that Canadians can visit for up to 90 days without requiring a visa. However, you'll still have to carry a passport that is valid for at least 3 months past your expected date of departure. You can move freely between Schengen area countries, but the 90-day limit applies to all countries and you'll need a visa if you plan on extending your stay.

The Best Time To Visit Estonia

You can have a great time in Estonia at any time of the year! The summer months (June to August) are the most popular for tourists, with long days, nice warm weather, and a variety of Estonian festivals taking place. As a result, it is also the time of year when flights and hotels cost the most. Budget-conscious travelers should consider a trip during the shoulder seasons (April to May or September to October) for the best combination of good weather, affordable hotels, and colorful landscapes. In the winter (November to February), Estonia can be very cold, but if you're brave enough to visit you'll be treated to a magical winter wonderland with gorgeous ski resorts open for the season.

What to Do in Estonia

Estonia is home to over 1500 islands, making it the perfect place to visit if you want to kick back on your own private beach, or go canoeing, birdwatching, sailing, or fishing. Much of Estonia's landscape is largely untouched, so the experience is more rustic and unique than your typical beach vacation. The country's capital, Tallinn, is home to a stunning Old Town that has remained intact since the middle ages - a rarity in Europe! There are also hundreds of medieval manors scattered throughout the countryside, many of which have become popular tourist attractions in recent years. Some of these are located in Lahemaa National Park, which features a stunning old-growth forest, trails, bogs, and wildlife that you won't want to miss. As an added bonus, it is only 50km east of the capital city, making it the perfect day trip destination!
