Airlines That Fly from Toronto to Stockholm
Flights to Stockholm are available from Toronto Island Airport (YTZ), also known as the Billy Bishop Airport, and Toronto-Pearson International Airport (YYZ). You'll find the airfares tend to be cheaper out of Toronto Pearson, as well as some flight itineraries with fewer stops. Several carriers have a codeshare program, meaning your ticket is sold on one carrier, but you may fly one or more legs on an airline partner.
- Air Canada is the only carrier flying out of Toronto Island Airport with service to Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Most flights have two connections via Montreal Airport (YUL) and Frankfurt International (FRA) or Munich International (MUC). On the plus side, Toronto Island Airport only has one terminal to negotiate and is the closest to downtown Toronto. The airport is reached by a quick ferry ride from the mainland or by taking the pedestrian tunnel.
- Out of Toronto Pearson International, you'll find one-stop service to Stockholm Arlanda Airport on Iceland Air, Air Canada and Lot Airlines. These carriers, as well as several others, provide two stop itineraries as well. Air service from Toronto Pearson to Stockholm Bromma is dominated by Brussels Airlines, with one, two and even three stop itineraries. Most international flights at Toronto Pearson use Terminal 3 or Terminal 1. Both have security stations. The easiest way to get around the airport is on the free Terminal Link Train, which also connects to the parking lots and the Sheraton Gateway Hotel. Though this train makes parking convenient, rates range from $20.00 CAD to $50.00 CAD per day, depending on the lot. The airport is about 25 kilometres from downtown Toronto, roughly a $50.00 CAD taxi ride.
What to Expect When Arriving in Stockholm's Airports
Only 43 kilometres from the city centre, the Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), welcomes international travellers at Terminals 2 and 5. The other two are mainly for domestic use. You'll find currency exchanges, ATMs, shops, restaurants and free Wi-Fi throughout the airport. A concentrated passenger service area called Sky City has even more to offer. Located in the center of Arlanda Airport, it is easily accessed by all terminals. The preferred way to get into town is by the Arlanda Express. The high-speed train, costing $42.00 CAD one way, gets you to Stockholm Central Station in roughly 20 minutes. Car rentals, taxis and various shuttle services are also available.
The Stockholm Bromma Airport (BMA) is smaller but only 10 kilometres from downtown, or a 20-minute drive. All flights arrive at its single terminal, which has more limited passenger services. Wi-Fi is available and free. You'll find car rental desks near baggage claim, and a taxi dispatcher right outside the arrival doors. Average taxi fare into town is about $50.00 CAD. Accepted currency in Stockholm is the Swedish Krona.
What to Do and See in Stockholm
- One of the most popular tourist attractions is Kungliga Slottet. The 608-room royal castle is both a working government building and the residence of the Royal Family. This castle replaced Tre Kronor Castle, which was damaged by fire in 1697. Much of its north wing survived the flames and is now part of the newer building, completed in 1754. Several guided tours per day are offered. Discover rooms filled with antique Rococo and Baroque furnishings as well as personal mementos from various members of the royal line. Admission to the palace also includes a visit to the Museum Tre Kronor, dedicated to the original castle, Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities and the Royal Treasury. Tickets are valid for up to seven days, so no need to rush.
- Get a first-hand look at the warship Vasa, which launched in 1628 and promptly sank before getting out of the harbour. The ship stayed in its watery grave until 1961 when it was raised and carefully reconstructed, piece by piece. The Vasamuseet is a custom built boathouse that has the ship as well as several artifacts on display. In the summer, guided tours in English are offered several times a day.
- Shoppers, take your pick. Visit the Ostermalm Saluhall, one of the oldest flea and street markets in Northern Europe, or head to Nordiska Kompaniet to explore the more traditional department stores. The Old Haymarket is local favourite. The indoor market offers fresh produce and locally produced goods and crafts. Sample local foods such as various types of herring or vegetables with lingonberries, an Arctic fruit. You'll often find vendors serving reindeer meatballs with mashed potatoes. On Sundays, an outdoor flea market adds even more fun.
