Flying out of Puerto Vallarta International Airport

Located 8 km from Puerto Vallarta, Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is the city's only airport. PVR is more commonly referred to as Puerto Vallarta International Airport. The airport consists of one passenger terminal. Due to Puerto Vallarta's warm weather and lovely beach resorts, the airport is busiest in the winter months.

Direct flights from Puerto Vallarta to Calgary are available both during the peak tourist season and during the off-peak months. Air Canada Rouge and Sunwing Airlines fly the route non-stop seasonally. Air Transat and WestJet fly the route non-stop year round.

Once you've set your travel dates, plan to arrive at PVR at least three hours before flight departure. You'll also need to have a valid passport to fly.

Calgary International Airport Information

Calgary International Airport (YYC) is located about 17 km from downtown Calgary. It is the busiest airport in Alberta and the fourth-busiest airport in all of Canada. The airport is made up of two terminals, a Domestic Terminal and an International Terminal. Each terminal is then split into multiple concourses. All flights from Puerto Vallarta will fly into Concourse D of the International Terminal.

Ground transportation options from Calgary International Airport are ample. If your hotel offers shuttle service, they will pick up at Bus Bay 37. There is also a downtown shuttle service every half hour that picks up from Bus Bay 29. The shuttle costs $15. Three public transportation bus routes have stops at both of YYC's terminals. Using these routes, you can access downtown Calgary as well as many other areas of the city.

Outside of Doors 16 and 17 at the International Terminal, you will find taxi stands. A taxi ride to downtown Calgary will generally take less than half an hour and cost around $45 CAD. YYC's Rental Car Centre is in a building across from the terminal buildings. Car rental options include Dollar, National and Thrifty.

What to Expect in Calgary

Since Puerto Vallarta is only an hour ahead of Calgary, you won't have to adjust to much of a time shift. The weather in the two cities, however, is quite different. Year round, Puerto Vallarta's weather is warm and pleasant, usually not dropping below 20°C or above 30°C. In contrast, Calgary experiences a large temperature variance throughout the year. Summers in Calgary are generally warm and winters are quite cold, with severe wind chill and large amounts of snowfall.

Peak tourist time for Puerto Vallarta is during the winter. In Calgary, peak tourist season is in the summer or fall, when the weather is warm to hot. If you visit the city in July, you'll be able to experience the Calgary Stampede, a celebrated Canadian rodeo festival.
