What to Expect When Arriving in Bangkok

  • International flights arriving into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International arrive at Terminal 1 or 2. A free airport shuttle service connects all terminals to the transportation centre. Downtown Bangkok is 31 kilometres away, and you have your choice of transportation options. Taxis charge a $2.00 CAD flag fall fee in addition to distance traveled. An inexpensive option is the Airport City Line that runs between 6 am and midnight daily. One way fare is roughly $6.00 CAD. You will need Thai baht coins to purchase tickets from the airport station dispensers. A rental car is an option, but rates are charged based on kilometres driven. Keep in mind that driving and parking in and around the city can be challenging.
  • The Don Mueang International Airport is 31 kilometres from downtown. International arrivals use Terminal 1. Transportation options are similar to that at the Suvarnabhumi Airport. The BMTA bus service charges $5.00 CAD from the airport to downtown. You'll need Thai baht coins for the ticket dispensers.

Airport Facilities

Both airports offer similar services. Wi-Fi is free throughout the terminals. Outlets for tourists to buy SIM cards by the week are available, as are chargers for various media devices. Cafes, delis and fast food outlets are widely available with either Thai or western-style foods. In the Suvarnabhumi Airport most dining outlets are located in their food court, the Magic Food Point. Name brand shops, quaint boutiques and specialty stores featuring Thai goods are found throughout the terminals in both pre and post-security areas.

Things to Do and See in Bangkok

  • The slender tower of Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, creates an elegant silhouette fronting the Chao Phraya River, most notable at sunset. The Grand Palace, circa 1782, and its gilded gold towers is also a must. Once the royal residence of the King of Siam, the palace now houses a museum, government offices and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
  • Step in the Chatuchak Flower Market for a delectably fragrant experience. Open Wednesday and Thursday, you'll also be able to pick up fresh produce from the many vendors. CentralWorld, considered one of the largest malls ever built, has a mixture of name brand and local goods, eateries and movie theatres.
  • Explore Lumphini Park, an open green space in the middle of downtown Bangkok. Rent a paddle boat and relax on the man-made lake or just wander the many pathways through the trees. As a special treat, enjoy a sunset dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River.
