Avila is a nice small town outside of Madrid! I would recommend going there on the way to Salamanca! There isn't too much to do in Avila, but the surrounding walls definitely make you feel like you went back in time!
The drive toward Avila was almost surreal, especially as you approach the outer wall of this wonderful, yet eerily medieval city. We stayed in a Spanish paradore built into the wall's fortifications, and loved it. However, if you want to see the real Avila, you must walk deeply into Avila's walled interior. There you will find how the local people live.
Avila is a great day trip from Madrid. The massive fortifications are the main tourist attraction, as is the medieval town center.
If you think in christian culture, Avila is a "not forget" place. I can't relate the quantity of churches, convents, palaces... But the old Muralla (defensive wall from the midle-age) is just the first impression. Granite streets thet remembers the birth of Santa Teresa will be there.
