Beautifully well kept old walled capital of Malta. Totally worth the day trip visit from Valletta by bus, only about 35-40 mins each way.

Located on a large hill and standing watch over the island, Mdina is a fortified medieval town. It is one of Europe's finest examples with narrow, cobbled streets and impressive yellow-stoned buildings. Mdina has served as the ancient capital of Malta until medieval times hence sometimes it is also known as Citta Vecchia, Old City or Citta Nobile, Noble City. Behind its fortified walls, Mdina will take visitors on a journey back in time to discover a mix of medieval and Baroque architectural gems including well-preserved churches and majestic palaces. Mdina is a silent city and its walls have turned it into an open air museum. Mdina is also host to a Cathedral, dedicated to St. Paul, that had to be rebuilt in 1702 after suffering extensive damage in an earthquake in 1693. The floor is paved and decorated in marble tombstones that depict cost of arms of bishops. Visitors can also enjoy the Mdina Dungeons, the Natural History Museum and various palaces with their incredible collections of antiques as well as a few restaurants and cafes.

In the centre of the island, this medieval walled city is the former capital. It is often called the 'Silent City' by it's 300 inhabitants. Well worth a visit.
