Akulivik is a small Inuit village in Quebec's Nunavik region. The village lies approximately 1,850 to the north of Montreal, across from Smith Island. Akulivik, which translates literally to "central prong of a kakivak," owes its name to the village's location on a peninsula between two bays.
The village's history dates back to 1610 when the explorer Henry Hudson discovered the island of Qikirtajuaq near what is known today as Akulivik. A Hudson's Bay Company trading post was established at the site and later moved to Qikirtajuaq in 1926. Until 1955, the area served as the summer camp of the Inuit, who gathered around the trading post. The village was incorporated as a community in 1976.
Being a remote community with a small population, there are no hotels in Akulivik. Accommodation is provided by a cooperative hotel located in the heart of the village. Further accommodations are available at cooperative hotels in Salluit, which is located approximately 200 kilometres to the north east of Akulivik; as well as in Kangiqsujuaq and Quaqtaq, both of which are located approximately 460 kilometres to the east-northeast of Akulivik. Regularly scheduled air service from Kangiqsujuaq and Quaqtaq Airports to Akulivic Airport is provided by Air Inuit. Accommodations in and around Akulivik are limited, so it's a good idea to reserve your room ahead of arriving in the area.
