Melbourne is Australia's second-largest city and undoubtedly its cultural capital. This is a city with world-class art galleries, a thriving cafe culture, and a trendy Bohemian feel, all of which makes Melbourne feel like one of the coolest and most sophisticated places on the planet. Along with a plethora of cultural attractions, Melbourne also serves as a great base for exploring Victoria's great outdoors. If you rent a car during your stay you can easily take advantage of those nearby natural attractions, such as The Grampians and the Great Ocean Road.

Most hotels in Melbourne are concentrated in and around the Central Business District (CBD), which is also where you will find most of the city's main attractions. The neighbourhood of St. Kilda also has a collection of hotels thanks to its beach, nightlife, and amusement park, making it a particularly popular area for young travellers.

High-End Hotels

If you are looking for a truly unforgettable stay in Melbourne, the city has quite a few luxurious 5-star hotels to choose from, such as:

The Hotel Windsor is undoubtedly Melbourne's most historic and possibly its most prestigious hotel. Marketed as the city's last grand hotel, the Hotel Windsor has overlooked the Victoria Parliament House and the surrounding gardens for more than a century. Featuring exceptional service, magnificent architecture, and sumptuous rooms with state-of-the-art facilities, a stay at Hotel Windsor will not soon be forgotten.

The Melbourne Marriott, in the northern section of the CBD, offers a more modern setting with unparalleled service and amenities. This hotel features excellent health facilities, including a gym, pool, and spa, and excellent restaurants and dining options. It is also conveniently located within walking distance of Melbourne's main attractions, including Chinatown, the Royal Exhibition Building, and the Melbourne Museum.

Mid-Range Hotels

For those who want comfort without breaking the bank, the following mid-range hotels are ideal:

Ibis Styles Melbourne, Victoria Hotel offers a superb location in the heart of the CBD, close to countless cafes and restaurants, this is a particularly great hotel for exploring Melbourne's famous alleyways. The rooms are comfortable and decorated with a modern touch. The lounge bar and pool are particularly exceptional.

Clarion Suites Gateway is located right on the gorgeous Yarra River in the middle of the CBD. It is also within minutes of the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex and the Flinders Street Train Station, which is not only ideal for taking transit to almost anywhere in the city, but is also one of Melbourne's premier architectural landmarks. The bar and cafe at this hotel have received especially high reviews.

Basic Accommodation

Finally, if you want to save some money and don't need all the amenities of the more expensive hotels, consider these options:

While St. Kilda has a reputation for catering to backpackers and young travellers, The Prince is one hotel in the area that is affordable while still being "adult." Rooms are tastefully furnished in a minimalist style, and there is even a spa onsite. It is also just steps from the beach and the beautiful St. Kilda's Pier.

Finally, the Atlantis Hotel Melbourne is located adjacent to the Southern Cross Station in the CBD, which makes getting to and from the airport especially easy if you are flying into Melbourne. The hotel was recently constructed, meaning all of the rooms and facilities are brand new. Given that there is a pool, gym, and sauna on the premises, this hotel is a bargain.
