White sand. Whales in the ocean. Tacos and festivals. Puerto Vallarta has it all, but when’s the best time to visit?
Most tourists will tell you to come to this Mexican paradise when it’s dry and a little cooler. It’s comfortable to walk around, hit the beach and see the sights. But don’t discount it at other times of the year. The conditions for adventures in the ocean are perfect in summer, and you might just get a great deal on your hotel. Plus, the food is to die for at any time of year.
When to visit Puerto Vallarta
Exploring, whale watching and water sports

Hit the shores of Puerto Vallarta in the cool and dry winter and spring months and the Mexican getaway really is your oyster. You’ll pay a little more for your hotel during peak season, but for many people it’s offset by the fact you’ll likely see whales mating off the coast of Banderas Bay – heading out on the water for a whale watching expedition is a must. As is strolling around the Zona Romantica – the city’s old town filled with traditional architecture, cobblestone streets, and local markets.
The cooler months – December to March – are the best time to hit the beach too. It’ll be dry and the temperatures won’t soar like they do in summer. Hit the sand at Mismaloya Beach, Banderas Bay, Madagascar Beach, Colomitos Beach, Los Tules and more. During the summer and rainy seasons, the temperatures can hit 105° and the rain does come (but it doesn’t rain all day). You can still sit on the beach. Plus, it’s the best time to visit for a spot of adventure – snorkelling is fantastic, and the waves are big at Sayulita.
For a cultural vacation, visit during Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) at the start of November or in December for the festival dedicated to Our Lady or Gaudalupe.
Things to do in Puerto Vallarta: At any time of year

Explore during the drier months
In winter and spring when things are a little drier, visit the Malecon Boardwalk for stunning ocean views, art sculptures, and local cuisine. Make your way to El Eden to enjoy zip-lining and swimming at this jungle adventure site.
Discover the ocean in the summer
During the summer months, the waves are big and perfect for surfing at Sayulita – come for the waves, stay for the bohemian vibe of this small surf town. Snorkel at Los Arcos Marine Park or the uninhabited islands of the Marietas Islands in summer when the visibility is high and the water calm.
See the whales in winter
Head to Banderas Bay from December to March to see the thousands of humpback whales that flock to these warm waters for the mating season.
Experience the lush flora in the rainy season
When the heavens open, the plants grow. If you’re here in the rainy season, visit Vallarta Botanical Gardens when the flora is most lush.
Hit the beach when it’s a little cooler
Hit the beach in winter to soak up the sun. Don’t miss the beautiful Mismaloya Beach, famous for its role in “The Night of the Iguana”.
