Fly to Oregon for skiing against a backdrop of snowy peaks this summer. Located on Mount Hood in Oregon, Timberline Lodge is one of the few ski areas in North America that consistently offers year-round lift-access skiing.

Although the available terrain is more limited than in winter, Timberline Lodge still offers between 450m and 750m of vertical skiing in the summer. With relaxed, slushy snow and terrain parks, it's a popular destination for everyone from winter sports enthusiasts to Olympic athletes. Training camps may reserve certain areas during the summer, but the resort makes a point of keeping the south slopes available for all visitors.

Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is located in the Fitzsimmons Range, one of many subranges that make up the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. Stretching across the neighbouring mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb, Whistler Blackcomb is known as North America's largest ski resort. Many of the ski runs are taken over by the bike park and black bears in the summer, but it still feels like winter at the peaks.

Skiing may be indefinitely paused on the Horstman's Glacier while Whistler awaits a stronger snowpack, but you can still explore the glacier. Take the Top of the World Summit open chairlift to the peak of Whistler Mountain, where you can hike around the glacier before grabbing lunch at 1,000m. Trek between the multi-story Snow Walls, and don't miss out on the PEAK 2 PEAK, a glass-bottomed gondola that travels 4.4km between Whistler and Blackcomb.

Whistler Blackcomb attracts plenty of international tourism, with more than half of its 3-million annual visitors arriving in the summer. While always a popular destination, it gained even more attention following the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, when the mountain hosted most of the alpine events. Whistler Village offers a variety of accommodations, from hostels to luxury hotels with vacation packages.

Most people in the Northern Hemisphere picture beaches and surfing when they think about Australia, but just as many people ride the slopes as well as the waves. From about June to October, Perisher Ski Resort attracts sunbirds from around the world for some of the best skiing and snowboarding south of the equator.

Perisher Ski Resort is Australia's largest ski resort with more than 45 lifts and a variety of terrain, and it encompasses four interconnected villages in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. Perisher Valley is the hub of the resort, offering a mix of terrain easily accessible from the lodge. Find your flow at the gentle slopes of Smiggin Holes, or weave through trees on the steeper runs of Blue Cow.

Open 11 months of the year, starting in May, the Dachstein Glacier is located in Austria near the town of Ramsau am Dachstein. Along with skiing and snowboarding, you can also explore the area on the Dachstein cable car, or check out the view from a 400-metre-high suspension bridge. The resort features 19km of ski runs for ski touring and freeriding, and it’s also an international training centre for cross-country skiers and Nordic sports.

Keep in mind that the resort is mainly human-powered, aside from the cable car. If the cable car is running, it transports you to 2700m altitude to the glacier, from which you can access most of the terrain—otherwise, pack your ski-touring kit or snowshoes for the uphill.

Zermatt Ski Resort is known as one of the best-known resorts in the Alps, if not the world, and it's one of the few that offer 365 days of skiing per year. Located in the canton of Valais in Switzerland at the foot of the Matterhorn, Zermatt Ski Resort offers 2,200m of vertical to test your endurance across a variety of off-piste routes and freeride terrain. In the summer, skiers and boarders can ride 21km of runs as well as a feature-packed terrain park.

About 20 minutes from Queenstown, New Zealand, Coronet Peak is one of the most popular ski resorts on the South Island. Along with its convenient location, one of the resort's biggest draws is its likeness to Middle Earth—the views from Coronet Peak and the dramatic mountain landscapes also served as filming locations for The Lord of the Rings.

It’s also one of the only resorts in the country to offer skiing on Friday and Saturday nights. The resort is normally open from June to mid-October, and it has snowmaking machines to fill in when the snowpack is lacking. Fly to Queenstown to discover a snowy destination this summer.
