Cheap Flights to Athens
Athens has been a sprawling city for over 3,000 years. Nestled among seven rolling hills and surrounded by glorious mountains, the breathtaking landscape alone is worth the trip. However, for history and culture lovers, Athens provides so much more than fresh air and pretty natural scenery. Considered the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of Western civilization, Athens combines ancient structures and ruins with modern living and luxurious tourist expectations. An eclectic mix of old versus new, Athens is an unforgettable adventure for the entire family.
Athens Travel GuideArriving at Athens International Airport
The Athens International Airport (AIA or Eleftherios Venizelos in its native tongue) is located 30 km outside of central Athens. It currently contains two terminals, the main and satellite, which serve up to 18 million passengers per year. Expansion efforts are underway to extend the passenger count to 21 million annually. Baby rooms, banking services, gambling/lottery services, seven business lounges, a minimarket, and pharmacy are available for traveler convenience.
Ground transportation options are plentiful to and from the airport. The airport connects to Athens Central Railway Station and Athens Metro Line 3. Nine buses depart from the Arrivals Level between Exits 2 and 3. Taxis always await eager tourists at exit 3. And Athens is also relatively car- friendly for those determined to drive.
Athens Attractions
Athens offers countless adventures for all ages. Postcard perfect ruins bake under the golden sun. Soak in the historical glory and architectural wonder at favorite monuments such as the Parthenon, Temples of Poseidon and Zeus, Delphi, Agora, the Acropolis, and Hadrian's Arch. Explore ancient museums, churches, gardens, and Dionysus Theater.
You can even climb Mt Lycabettus to be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire city. The kids will love the Golden Hall Playground, the Greek Children's Art Museum, or a family ride on Athens Happy Train. And, of course, Plaka, Gazi, and Kolonaki Square provide shopping, nightlife, and dining in excess. A little warning: Beachcombers may need some prodding to leave the white sand beaches and clear, turquoise water. So plan out your visit in advance whenever possible.
Tips for Your Athens Adventure
Spring (April to June) is the best time to enjoy mild weather and thinner tourist lines. Summer is especially busy and the heat can be unbearable for non-locals. While here, consider a group tour. Bus tours are plentiful, but hop-on-hop-off tours are some of the best options. Averaging an hour-and-a-half in length, they're perfect for the entire family and some are even wheelchair accessible.
With these tours, you literally hop on the bus at any stop around the city, hop off to see the sights you're interested in, and hop back on at another stop. While bus tours aren't free, they are easy, efficient, and can save you a lot of headaches and regrets in the long run. Just be sure to keep your hand on your passport and wallet at all times because pickpockets are unfortunately plentiful.
