Best Time to Book a Flight to Anchorage International Airport
Anchorage International is open year round, but most visitors arrive between late spring and early fall. The airport is an important gateway for cruise passengers who take one-way cruises along the Alaskan coast and then fly back home. Midweek flights tend to be less expensive, but price is often governed by your departure city. For example, Seattle to Anchorage is a popular route. The competition among airlines can bring the airfares down. At the same time, during the busy cruise season higher passenger traffic can mean the cheapest fares sell out early. The Skyscanner Whole Month Search option can pull up an entire month's worth of fares for comparison. Being flexible with your travel dates and booking early can help keep costs down.
Airlines That Fly to Anchorage International Airport
Alaska Airlines is the signature carrier to Anchorage International. Their services have expended throughout North America, making it the airline of choice for many. Other domestic carriers include Delta, American, JetBlue and United. International airlines offering passenger service include Air Canada, Icelandair, Korean Air and Japan Airlines. Some carriers are seasonal and operate only during the warmer months. Anchorage also has a large cargo and charter plane operation. Passenger airlines operate out of both the north and south terminals.
What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport
The South Terminal tends to welcome more passenger flights and a fully staffed Visitor Information Centre is located outside baggage claim on Level One of the "C" Concourse. The North Terminal's Visitor Center is in the lobby of that terminal and is staffed to greet flight arrivals. Both terminals offer an assortment of shops, eateries, ATMs and free Wi-Fi access.
A free airport shuttle connects passengers to the parking lots and the rental car outfits, running every 15 minutes. The People Mover Bus, operated by the City of Anchorage, offers service between the airport and downtown Anchorage between 6:00 am and 11.00 pm daily. Fare is roughly $4.00 CAD each way, but day and multi-ride passes are available. Taxi fares usually run around $35.00 CAD into downtown. Anchorage is pretty spread out and there is so much to see that a rental car is often your best option, at least during the warmer months.
What to See and Do in Anchorage
Anchorage is a contrast between an increasingly modern city and the absolutely stunning wilderness that surrounds it. The local wildlife pays no attention to the city limit signs. You're just as apt to find a moose walking down a residential street as you are munching greens in neighbouring Chugach State Park. You'll also find wild creatures in Kincaid Park, still within city limits. The park overlooks scenic Cook Inlet and is a favourite with local hikers. Near the airport you'll find the Alaska Aviation Museum, paying tribute to the many bush pilots that continue to keep the state up and running. If you have some time to explore beyond Anchorage, catch a ride on the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park. Guided bus tours take you deep into the park to give you the best view of Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, the tallest peak in North America. Spend the night at Denali and catch the train back the next day or head on to Fairbanks.
