1. Northern Arizona
Not your typical sunny beach vacation destination, don’t rule out this gem in the south of the U.S. Northern Arizona is a great destination for Christmas break; offering fewer crowds, lots of exciting things to do, and some excellent food and experiences along the way.
Head to Flagstaff where you can book a Harley Davidson on the historic Route 66 and do a self-guided tour. And get that camera out and head to some of the most beautiful sights and national parks in the U.S. Arizona is blessed with places like the Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, and Canyon de Chelly. And there’s always the Grand Canyon (if you’re into that once-in-a-lifetime jaw-dropping experience thing, of course).
For a bit of city culture, make your way to Sedona and explore the many art galleries, spas, and restaurants. Get all metaphysical at one of Sedona’s four known ‘Energy Vortexes‘, which are sacred spaces believed to have transformational and spiritual abilities. One is even located near the airport, so it’s an easy trip on your way in or out of the city.
2. Banff
Banff is known as one of the most popular summer destinations in Canada, but don’t rule it out for Christmas break! Some of the top Canadian travel experiences including skating on Lake Louise, so head to Banff, Alberta this Christmas break and see what all the fuss is about.
If you want to treat yourself, stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs (which is cheaper in the winter) and enjoy the Willow Stream Spa where you can relax your body and soul. It’s no wonder that Banff is one of the top destinations for Christmas Break. Want to find more of Canada’s top hot springs? We’ve got a list for you here.

3. Orlando
Theme parks, warm weather, outdoor experiences for the whole family only a flight away – what’s not to love about Orlando? This sunny Florida destination always ranks as one of the top spots for Christmas Break.
So what should you check out? Be amazed at The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There’s also Volcano Bay, a new waterpark from Universal Resorts where you don’t have to wait in line for the rides. And another great thing about Orlando is that it has plenty of hotel options so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one that fits your budget.
4. Edinburgh
Edinburgh might not be a top winter destination but with more flight deals from Canada to Scotland, don’t rule out this beautiful capital city in western Europe!
During the winter months, you’ll find six weeks of festive entertainment in the heart of the city of Edinburgh. Be sure to check out their Christmas market, and continue exploring the area where you’ll find a Ferris wheel, Santa train, ice wall, tree maze, double carousel, and much more.
After you’ve got your dose of seasonal fun, explore the best of Edinburgh on a walking tour, sightsee at the National Museum, and warm up in one of the city’s many pubs. We recommend the Innis & Gunn Brewpub, which serves some of the world’s most delicious beer (in our humble opinion).
5. Toronto
Keep things local and plan a staycation in our country’s largest city this Christmas. Toronto has plenty to offer any traveller regardless of the time of the year, and there’s always something to do during the winter season in Toronto.
There are a bunch of Christmas markets in Toronto and the main one, The Toronto Christmas Market in the famous Distillery District, takes place from November 14 – December 22 this year. The Christmas Market is free entry from Tuesday-Friday, and $6.00 on Friday evening and on the weekends. Experience Old World charm in the middle of the big city!
For more winter fun, grab your friends and lace up your skates at the Nathan Phillips Square rink. Stay warm by shopping ’til you drop at the nearby Eaton Centre or treat yourself to evening cocktails at one of T.O’s top rooftop bars like the one at the Cactus Club Café.
6. New York City
No one rings in the New Year like New York City does. Honestly, the party at Times Square is watched all over the world, don’t you want to be part of it? If you do, you need to book your hotel now! Hotel Pennsylvania offers reasonable rates and is walking distance from the celebrations.
Other things you should do while you’re in the city include going for a stroll and even a skate at Central Park, checking out one of the art museums, eating in your favourite neighbourhood, and catching a Broadway show. Need some travel tips? Check out our New York City travel guide here.
7. Lisbon
The weather in December isn’t ideal in Lisbon compared to the summer months, but the weather is redeemed by the fact that direct flights are easy to find from Canada. Lisbon is great since the city has plenty to offer even if you’re limited on time.
The first day you arrive in Lisbon, you should explore the city and then head for the nearby hills where you can enjoy some panoramic views. While you’re in the city, a quick trip to Belem where you must visit Pasteis de Belém for some delicious Portuguese egg tarts, and be amazed by the Jerónimos Monastery. If you’ve got a full day to spare, make your way to Sintra to see the stunning architecture. Lisbon is a great winter break destination for everyone.
8. Singapore
Catch a flight deal from Canada to Asia and you might find that Singapore is an ideal Christmas break destination. There’s something going on any month of the year in Singapore and the sights will keep you busy for days. The Gardens by the Bay is the place to be since a festive market is set up to replicate European Christmas markets.
You’ll find crafts and snacks for sale while the setup of lights will put you in the festive mood despite the fact that there won’t be any snow. Theme parks also get in on the action with both S.E.A Aquarium and Universal Studios hosting their own events to celebrate the holidays.
