The Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport is only 10 kilometres from the heart of Guayaquil. A taxi dispatcher is available outside of baggage claim on the first floor to direct you to an approved taxi cab. Charges are $2.00 CAD for the start and $1.00 CAD per kilometre. Rental cars are another option. Be sure to exchange some cash at the airport for US Dollars, which is the legal currency in Ecuador.

Sitting on the banks of the Rio Guayas, the port city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, is a retreat for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Santay Island National Recreational Area is a protected wetland connected to the town of Guayaquil by a footbridge. Rent a bicycle and peddle on over or take a boat ride from the Yacht Club of Guayaquil to this bit of land in the middle of the river. Go shopping at the Malecon 2000, a riverside boardwalk offering local goods and cafes serving traditional food and drink. The Museo Antropologico y de Arte Contemporaneo displays pre-Columbian artifacts along with collections of modern contemporary art. In the midst of town is the Guayaquil Metropolitan Cathedral. The ornate Gothic cathedral is filled with delicately sculptured arches and stained glass windows. Spend time in Seminario Park and watch the iguanas roam among the sculptures.
