What to Expect When Arriving in Tokyo

At Narita International Airport, international flights usually arrive at Terminal 1. Shuttle buses connect the airport's three terminals. Access to downtown Tokyo, about 77 kilometres away, is by train, public bus, taxi or cars. Haneda Airport, about 21 kilometres from downtown, also has a dedicated international terminal. Complimentary shuttle buses connect the domestic and international sections. Similar transportation options into the city of Tokyo are available.

Throughout the terminals you'll find ATMs, currency exchange counters, postal services, beauty salons and lounges. Wi-Fi is available, as are places to buy or rent cell phones or SIM cards. Coin operated computer terminals are also available. Passenger services are similar at the Haneda Airport.

Things to Do and See in Tokyo

History is revered in Tokyo, Japan. Visit the Meiji Shrine, a quiet Shinto site surrounded by a garden and lush forests. It's located in the Shibuya district. The Senso-Ji temple dates back to 645 and honors Kannon, goddess of mercy. This Buddhist temple is one of the oldest and most famous in Japan. The Roppongi district is known for its shopping, art galleries and nightlife. Many foreign embassies are located here. For a real local experience, head for the Tsukiji Fish Market to watch the daily tuna auctions. Used for sashimi, these fish go for big bucks. Other not to miss sites include the Tokyo Imperial Palace, the Shinjuku Garden and Ueno Park. The latter is favored for its zoo, a tranquil lake and several museums.
