Flying out of Bogota
The Spanish colonists founded this city as the capital of a kingdom they called New Granada in 1548, but the history of human settlement in this region goes back to the Pleistocene Era. Tourists, historians, scientists, and other travelers have visited Bogota as a final destination and transportation hub since the beginning of time. Today, this remains a vibrant cultural headquarters with an equally active and busy airport. Romantically named after a legendary lost city of gold, El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is Colombia's main link to international transportation and flights within the country. The secondary airport, nearby, CATAM, is used for military aviation and law enforcement.
If you're flying internationally, Air Canada services a regular route here that includes direct flights from Toronto. Those who are flying to another Colombian city travel with national airlines and low-cost regional carriers. This includes bigger airlines like Avianca, LATAM Colombia and smaller ones such as Empresa Aérea de Servicios. The Bogota-Medellin trip is a very common one, so you can take your pick when it comes to date and time.
Medellin Airport Options
Medellin is serviced by two airports, Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) and José María Córdova International Airport Airport (MDE), which is located less than an hour away in the nearby city of Rionegro. Your flight from Bogota will most likely land in EOH, which exclusively handles domestic flights. MDE, the second busiest airport after BOG in Bogota, is dominated by the bigger national carrier Viva Colombia. There is a chance that your flight from Bogota will land here if it’s with one of the big airlines, so be sure to double-check your destination if you need to arrange for pickup or accommodation upon arrival.
