What to Expect When Arriving in Oslo

Located 47 kilometres from downtown Oslo, you'll find that the least expensive, and at 20 minutes the fastest trip into town, is the Flytoget shuttle train. You'll pay $25.00 CAD for the ride. Taxis charge about $95.00 for the same distance. For late or early flight arrivals, a surcharge is usually added. Oslo Torp International is 110 kilometres from Oslo's city centre. It also has one main terminal with one section used for domestic flights. It takes the Torp Oslo train about an hour and 45 minutes to get from the airport to downtown Oslo. The charge is $45.00 CAD. Taxis take about 80 minutes, but flat rates are usually negotiated before you leave. Both airports have plenty of shops, restaurants, fast food outlets and ATMs. Wi-Fi is free in both cases.

What to See and Do in Oslo

Visit Oslo and find yourself in the land of the Vikings. The city itself dates back to 1040 when it was a strategic trading post. Now Norway's capital honours its seafaring past with museums dedicated to navigators of the sea. Visit the Viking Ship Museum to see the restored Gokstand a Viking ship found within an earth mound in a farmer's field. Built in the 9th century, archaeologists think it was part of a burial ritual for an important Viking leader. The Kon-Tiki Museum is dedicated to Thor Heyerdahl, who in the latter half of the 1900s sailed across an ocean in a reed boat replica, proving long distance navigation in ancient times was possible. Oslo is also the home of the Nobel Peace Prize and a special centre honours the founder Alfred Nobel and noted recipients. Itching to do a bit of skiing? Head for the Tryvann Ski Resort to challenge that white powder. If you want to do a bit of shopping, three shopping malls, the Paleet, Oslo City and Byporten, are conveniently located in the downtown core.
