Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport is located in Callao about 7 miles from the historic center of Lima. It is the country's main domestic and international airport and is the fourth largest air hub in Latin America. Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is Cuzco's only airport and is located just over 2 miles from the city's historic center. It has one restaurant and several snack bars as well as money exchange facilities and ATMs that accept all major credit and debit cards. On the lower level located toward the back is a tourist information center where staff can provide information not only on Cuzco but all of Peru.

Within the airport grounds taxis are available to take you to the city. You can take a Llama taxi which is an official taxi or one of the many unofficial taxis that operate from outside the baggage collection area. Local buses operate from outside the airport grounds.

Tips for Traveling to Cuzco

Cuzco is located at an altitude of 11,200 feet. It is common for visitors from lower altitudes to experience a mild form of altitude sickness for the first few days. Rest and relax for a few days on arrival and let your body get used to the thinner air before exerting yourself. Drinking lots of water and a cup or two of the local coca tea each day will help minimize the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Attractions in Cuzco

Cuzco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas. If you only visit one site in the Inca capital it should be Qurikancha, the richest temple in the Inca empire. Not much remains of the temple which now forms the base of the colonial church and convent of Santo Domingo, but the remaining stonework including a 6-meter high wall and various chambers around the courtyard are excellent examples of Incan architecture.

La Catedral and the many churches in and around Cuzco are built on old Incan sites and allow visitors to get an interesting view of Cuzco's Spanish colonial history. The Museo Inka is the best museum for Inca history and you wouldn't want to miss a visit to Machu Picchu the lost Incan city which is only a 20-minute train ride away.
