Airports in Stockholm
Stockholm is the primary entry point for travelers arriving in Sweden, with two airports close to the city and two satellite airports further afield. Most major international flights arrive at the busy Stockholm Arlanda Airport, 35 kilometers from the city center. From here, express trains, regular trains, airport coaches and taxis all make the journey into Central Stockholm. Much closer to the city center, the smaller Bromma Airport offers airport coaches that whisk travelers downtown in only twenty minutes.
Some airlines also refer to flights into Svatska Airport, in Nykoping, and Vasteras Airport as being destined for Stockholm. These airports are both more than 100 kilometers from Stockholm's city center, and it takes about an hour and a half to reach Stockholm by train or bus from either of these arrival points. Check your itinerary carefully before booking to ensure you land at the best airport to suit your travel needs.
What to See and Do in Stockholm
Central Stockholm is small and easily walkable, and choosing a hotel in the Old Town (Gamla Stan) will put the best of the city right at your doorstep. This little island is home to the most picturesque narrow streets in the city, along with tourist attractions like the Stockholm Cathedral, Riddarholmen Church and the Royal Palace, where a changing of the guard ceremony occurs daily during high season. Across the bridge, the Norrmalm district is the city's modern heart, with museums and art galleries filling the streets around the Sergels Torg square. Make sure to reserve a table at one of the many restaurants that serve a weekend smorgasbord, which is a special Swedish buffet of hot and cold dishes that may include Swedish meatballs, pickled herring, boiled potatoes, rye bread and lingonberry jam.
