Best Time to Book a Flight to Sapporo
Surprisingly, one of the most popular times for tourists to visit Sapporo is during the cold, snowy winter months. Because the city receives such heavy snowfall, winter events and festivals are quite common. The Sapporo Snow Festival, which occurs annually in February, draws millions of tourists each year for a week of music, food, and the building and viewing of incredible ice sculptures.
Throughout the rest of the year, temperatures in Sapporo generally range from cool to warm. Humidity is high and rainfall is quite common. The weather is warmest from June to August, making the summer months another great time to visit the city.
Airlines that Fly to New Chitose Airport

Popular low-cost carriers like Peach and Vanilla Air also fly to CTS. Arriving at the Airport
New Chitose Airport is made up of two very large terminals, one for domestic flights and one for international flights. Despite being consistently busy, it should not take long to go through customs or to collect your baggage as the airport is well known for its efficiency. There are taxi ranks just outside of both terminals to take you to Sapporo or to any other neighbouring town. A taxi ride into downtown Sapporo will take about an hour.
Car rental services are also available on the first floor of each terminal. You can choose from one of the dozen companies at the airport, or book a car free with Skyscanner before your trip to ensure availability. As the area outside of the airport is quite busy, the car rental companies offer shuttle services from the airport to their offices for car pickup.
The JR Line express train is another popular and affordable transportation option. The train station is located in the basement of the domestic terminal. Trains take about 40 minutes to get to downtown Sapporo.
New Chitose Airport Facilities
With hundreds of shops, restaurants, and bars available, New Chitose Airport is a fantastic spot to have a layover. Not only are there extensive shopping and dining options, there are also ample entertainment options, including a movie theatre with over 300 seats, and an indoor park and game zone for kids. For your relaxation needs, there is also a spa and nail salon available at the airport. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the two terminals.
What to See and Do in Sapporo
Though Sapporo is quite a large city, it is not as urban as other large Japanese cities like Tokyo or Osaka. Many of the most popular tourist spots in Sapporo are outdoor areas, like Moerenuma Park. The park has playground equipment, sports fields, a music stage, fountains, and thousands of beautiful cherry trees. The park's main attraction is a three-floor glass pyramid which houses a small art gallery, gift shop, and restaurant.
Though the city has many calming, green areas, you can also experience the hustle and bustle of the big city by exploring Sapporo's Susukino neighbourhood. With hundreds of shops, restaurants, and karaoke bars, this large entertainment district is the ideal spot for a fun night out.
