Visit Atlanta in the summer when temps average 32 degrees Celsius and the humidity is at its heaviest and you'll appreciate the custom of sipping sweet tea on a shaded porch. Located only 11 kilometres from downtown Atlanta, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport welcomes guests to two terminals and seven concourses handling nearly 200 gates. The Domestic Terminal has two sides. Terminal South is used by Delta, the hub airline. Terminal North handles all other domestic carriers, including American, Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue Southwest, Spirit and United. The Maynard Holdbrook Jackson Jr. International Terminal is separate. Some of the international carriers are Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic. Shops, eateries and services are available throughout the airport, as is Wi-Fi.

All terminals and the concourses are connected by a series of underground passenger moving walkways called the Transportation Mall. The automated Plane Train, a people mover, also runs the length of the Transportation Mall and has designated stops. The Plane Train will also take you to baggage claim.

If you're looking for a rental car, take the ATL SkyTrain, another automated people mover that connects the airport to the Rental Car Center and its 13 car companies. That SkyTrain will also take you to the Georgia International Convention Center and several airport hotels. Atlanta Airport is also connected to the city's rapid transit train, MARTA. The station is between the north and south domestic terminals, in the main entry building. Shuttles are available at various pick-up points, averaging $20.00 CAD per person to downtown Atlanta.

What to See and Do in Atlanta

  • If you're into the outdoor life, check out Stone Mountain Park, on the eastern end of Greater Atlanta. Go hiking, take the scenic tram ride or just do some wildlife watching. Or visit the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, on the northern end of the city. The park's nature centre offers kayak and canoe lessons and can point out the best nature trails to follow. If you'd rather get your exercise closer to town try Grant Park, Piedmont Park or spend some time at the Atlanta Zoo. The pandas are a hit.
  • No less than 45 museums dot the city, including the Jimmy Carter Library & Museum, the World of Coca-Cola, Atlanta is the birthplace of that fizzy drink, and the Margaret Mitchell House, once the home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gone With the Wind. Check out the Delta Flight Museum, next to the Atlanta Airport, the Children's Museum of Atlanta, the Interact Art Museum and the slightly creepy Bodies the Exhibition Museum. Baseball lovers, the Atlanta Braves also have their own Ivan Allen Jr. Braves Museum Hall of Fame.
  • As far as food, you simply must try some Atlanta Southern barbeque. South City Kitchen, Fat Matt's Ribs and the Twin Smokers BBQ are good places to start. Peaches are a favourite fruit in Atlanta, whether they are in a peach cobbler, a peach pie or blended into rich ice cream.
