Phnom Penh Airport (PNH) is located about 10 kilometres outside of the bustling heart of Phnom Penh. As the biggest airport in Cambodia, it serves the capital city, as well as nearby areas. It has two passenger terminals, one for domestic flights and one for international flights. Airport facilities include a variety of food and beverage outlets, shops and a duty-free store, ATMs, currency exchange services, and a pay-to-use lounge.

Bus number 3 runs between Chom Chav Roundabout (outside the city) and the central Night Market, passing the airport on the way. The fare from the airport to the city centre, and vice versa, is around 1,500 KHR (approximately CA $0.50), though do note that this is mainly used by locals and does not stop close to many of the major hotels and guesthouses. The easiest way for many people to travel to and from the airport is by taxi or tuk tuk. A one-way trip costs around 37,000 to 61,000 KHR (CA $12 to $20).

Currency in Cambodia

The official currency in Cambodia is the Cambodian riel (KHR), though US dollars are also widely accepted and dispensed from ATMs. Many establishments accept payment in US dollars, but they may give change in riels. Riels cannot be obtained or exchanged outside of the country.

Visa Requirements

Canadian passport holders can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Phnom Penh Airport. It costs about $50, and you will need to provide a passport photo. Do note that the visa sticker takes up a full passport page.

Things to Do in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is a city of contrasts, with elegant colonial architecture standing alongside crumbling buildings from times gone by, traditional Khmer structures, and areas of shanty housing. It is energetic with an edgy and almost gritty vibe; the busy streets, steamy sidewalks, and hectic activities of the city centre streets are mixed in the trendy atmosphere of the swanky restaurants and bars along the riverside.

The historic and glittering Royal Palace is a major tourist attraction, with many ornate and opulent details to be admired. The Silver Pagoda, with its sacred shrines and shining halls, is another eye-catching landmark, and a great place to experience some of the local spirituality. Wat Phnom and Wat Ounalom are also great if you are interested in Buddhism and learning more about the local beliefs.

The Independence Monument celebrates Cambodia becoming an independent nation, whilst the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument shows the past allegiance between the two neighbouring SE Asian lands.

One of the city’s main places of interest is the harrowing the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, also known as S21 Prison. Originally a school, it was converted into a prison by the notoriously brutal Khmer Rouge, used to house and torture thousands of prisoners during Pol Pot’s reign of terror. Now a museum, you can see many instruments of torture, cells, and moving exhibitions.

Phnom Penh is often used as a gateway to the infamous Killing Fields of Choeng Ek. Located outside of the city, this is where many men, women, and children were executed. A moving memorial containing many human bones has been erected to remember the victims.
