Getting to Kigali

Kigali International Airport is the main airport serving Kigali. It is located just a few kilometres away from the downtown business district.

There are no direct flights from Canada to Kigali. Air Canada, KLM, and Brussels Airlines all offer service to Kigali.

Canadians require a passport that must be valid for at least six month after leaving Rwanda. Ask your transportation provider for other passport requirements that may be in place.

Additionally, Canadians must also have a visa that is valid for 30 days. You will need to present this document and pay a visa fee to enter the country. If you want to stay for longer, you require a different type of visa, which you can apply for at the immigration office in Kigali.

What to Do in Kigali

Kigali, and the whole of Rwanda, has a long-standing history, but its recent history, particularly its genocide, is what many people might know. Make sure you stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This moving and intense stop is set in a striking rose garden with a picturesque fountain. Kigali is more than just its recent history. Visit the Museum of Natural History to learn about the natural background of the nation and surrounding area. If you want to immerse yourself in present day Kigali, visit one of its energetic markets. Caplaki is known for its handicrafts, all created by local artisans. Kigali has also many vibrant bars and cafes where you can sit back and watch the world go by.

When to Visit Kigali

The best time to visit Kigali is during its two dry seasons, one from December to February, and the other from June to September. Temperatures are moderate and pleasant.

February to May and September to December are the two rainy seasons in Kigali and its surrounding area. Floods are common during this time and roads outside of Kigali can become impassable.
