The Government of Canada currently recommends avoiding all travel to Crimea or the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts due to armed conflicts in the area.

What to Expect in Kiev

The national capital of Ukraine, Kiev is a lively, eclectic city with a vibrant nightlife. As the center of Ukrainian culture, Kiev is home to a huge variety of museums, theatres, ancient ruins, and modern architecture. The main languages spoken are Ukrainian and Russian, with few citizens being fluent in English, so be sure to brush up on your language skills before you leave! Due to the prevalence of pickpockets, especially when using public transportation, we recommend leaving most valuable items in your hotel room if possible. There is some risk involved in traveling to Ukraine due to the recent armed conflicts and the occupation of Crimea by Russia, but Kiev is still a very safe city to visit!
