The journey from chilly England to sunny Spain is an ancient one, with roots in religious traditions, trade routes, and finally in modern times, just for the fun of it. This has become such a popular trip that you can take your pick between multiple airports in metropolitan London, departure times, and both low cost and conventional airlines.

Flying out of Heathrow

Welcome to the third busiest airport on the face of the earth, London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). The airport is connected to an equally impressive ground transport system that includes London, the surrounding region, other parts of the UK, and Europe.

  • Trains at the airport connect with both light and heavy rail. You can take a long-haul train from here or hop on the London Underground to reach the city.
  • Buses are another option, as Heathrow has it’s own extensive private coach and public bus terminal.
  • Inter-Terminal Transport is available for those that need to get to Terminals 4 or 5 via Heathrow’s own train and bus systems.

Travellers can arrive at Heathrow in a variety of ways. Make sure you allow enough time for terminal changes, gate transfers, and of course some shopping and dining in any number of the airport’s state of the art terminals.

Airlines that Fly from Heathrow to Barcelona

There are officially five terminals at LHR, but Terminal One is currently closed pending some future renovation plans. The other four terminals are organized by airline affiliate, so when you're looking for your gate, it helps to know the airline alliance on your ticket.

  • British Airways, in conjunction with fellow OneWorld partner and Spanish national carrier Iberia, make several runs a day on this route with even more flights to choose from during the winter high season. These flights leave from Terminal Five, which is occupied exclusively by these two airlines and their subsidiaries.
  • Vueling is a low cost carrier based in Spain that makes frequent flights between LHR and it’s home and hub airport in Barcelona. These flights are also operated in cooperation with British Airways.
  • KLM, in Terminal 4 with the other SkyTeam members, flies this route with a stop in Amsterdam.
  • TAP Portugal, national carrier and Star Alliance member, makes this flight with a stop in Lisbon.

There are no Canadian airlines that fly this route, but Air Canada has a ticket counter in Terminal 2 with the other Star Alliance members if you need to connect with the national carrier overseas.

Barcelona Airport Information

Unlike London, your destination city has one main airport. Your flight lands in Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), usually simply referred to as the Barcelona Airport. A bustling city for tourism and trade, the city and its airport have evolved to meet the needs of more than 44 million passengers annually. The airport is split into two terminals, and each is then divided into different modules or sections according to destination or airline affiliate. Most low-cost flights land and depart from Terminal 1, with most of the others heading to Terminal 2.

Passengers waiting for a connection can take advantage of an array of services that include duty-free shopping, day spas, and dining options that range from cafeterias to restaurants. Relax in any one of several upscale lounges after taking advantage of preferential access in security and check-in lines. For those lucky enough to have arrived at their destination, jump on the commuter train directly from Terminal 2, or the metro line that has a stop at both terminals.
